Death, taxes, and Stephen A. Smith trashing the Dallas Cowboys. The ESPN personality goes out of his way to do and say whatever he can to make sure that people know he hates America’s Team. He and Skip Bayless argued (loudly) for years on television about the team and somehow Smith is still doing it to this day.

Smith had a jolly good time making fun of the Cowboys when he had Hall of Famer Michael Irvin on First Take. Dallas essentially handed Smith the confidence to trash them on national television on a silver platter with their poor performance in the first round of the playoffs.

But now, Smith revealed that he may have to stop trolling the Cowboys in the future? Could that even be possible?! How?! Because of the news that broke on Tuesday about New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. Payton told the Saints that he would be “stepping away” from the team. The coach did not reveal whether he would be retiring, going into broadcasting, or anything else. But, Payton didn’t deny the idea that he may coach again in the future.

Smith apparently has a lot of respect for Payton. So much respect that it may change his feelings about the Cowboys.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith says he would have to stop trolling Cowboys if they hire Sean Payton

Smith is animated about everything, but he seemed especially animated about his love for Sean Payton. Who knew?

“It might mean that I can’t troll the Cowboys as much as I’m accustomed to,” Smith said.

Smith said Payton can win a Super Bowl with Dallas given the personnel on the current roster. He tried to back track a little bit by saying that the Cowboys could still mess it up given that Payton “can’t control everything,” in terms of player behavior off the field. Smith says the Dallas offense will automatically be elevated just by Payton’s presence on the sideline.

What praise! If Payton does come to the Cowboys in 2022 or 2023, will fans of America’s Team be more excited about having him as a coach or about not having to listen to Smith obnoxiously troll their team anymore?
