Dalton Schultz. 6. player. Scouting Report. Tight End. . 123. Pick Analysis

Tight end Dalton Schultz is often the forgotten man in this offense but his reliability isn’t the only reason I have him on this list. I have not heard the term “Dak Friendly” in a bit so I assume that everyone has realized that Dak is now the franchise quarterback that can manage a game or put a team on his back and carry them. One of the main reasons for that is the reliability from tight end Dalton Schultz.

Schultz is in the last year of his rookie contract and I sure would love to see the Cowboys attempt to lock him up with an extension. I realize the team has reportedly said that they are going to wait before handing out any cash but I think you can safely assume that Schultz is someone the Cowboys would love to keep.

Dallas Cowboys: Let’s Play the Game

Would you give Dalton Schultz a five-year $40 million extension today?

The Cowboys have been burned in the past by handing out contracts a year too early for players like Jaylon Smith and Tyrone Crawford. I would argue that it cost them more by waiting on players like quarterback Dak Prescott or defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

I understand that they want to wait to see how this coaching staff gels. Figuring out if the player fits where the Cowboys want to go in the future is a must but it is quite obvious Schultz is the best man for the job at tight end.

Opening contract talks now could save this team a lot of money. I would not continue to wait. Who knows, with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore looing like he could be a head coaching candidate come the turn of the year, he could prioritizing taking Schultz with him wherever he decided to go.

Dallas Cowboys: The Verdict

Dalton Schultz is a fan favorite but favorites can often outprice themselves too. If you see former Cowboys and current Bills receiver Cole Beasley and all of his headlines, I wonder what the tune of those who cried for Beasley to stay are saying now?

Schultz is a big but underrated part of what the Cowboys are doing and giving Schultz $8 million per season is big but that salary would put him in the same salary category as Chicago’s Jimmy Graham and Washington’s Logan Thomas.

I would argue that Schultz is a far better player than both of those guys and you can see the dilemma the Cowboys might find themselves in. Do they pay Schultz or do they continue with Blake Jarwin? Either way, Schultz figures to be a hot commodity come free agency. I say pay the man now!
