Is C.J. Henderson to the Dallas Cowboys a possibility?

The Dallas Cowboys are always linked to available players and unfortunately, that is the reality when you nickel and dime a significant portion of your roster.

The only real money the team dishes out is when they decide to extend their own drafted players.

When the team decides to look into a player, the number one thing that always seems to knock the Dallas Cowboys out of signing contention is the price. The team seems pretty amicable to giving up the necessary assets when talking about player acquisition.

The front office also loves to poach former first-round guys who haven’t met expectations. If you roll all of their tendencies into one, Jacksonville Jaguars second-year cornerback C.J. Henderson fits all of those qualities.

I had him ranked higher than current second-year Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs during the NFL draft. Detroit drafted my highest-rated cornerback in Jeff Okudah while Jacksonville took Henderson which crushed my hopes of having him in Dallas.

Luckily, second-round cornerback Trevon Diggs has easily been the best of all three corners so far. There are now reports that C.J. Henderson is available and the Dallas Cowboys should be all over this deal right now.

I am salivating thinking about adding this talented player that is going through a rough patch. If you remember correctly, I originally had the Cowboys drafting him last year before Jacksonville took him ninth overall.

Yes, Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright are making plays and have done so much that a very prominent sports figure with a great track record of covering the Dallas Cowboys thinks current starting cornerback Anthony Brown is trade bait.

That is quite a statement considering the upward trend both Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright have still have not enabled the team to name one of them a starter.

Jacksonville rookie head coach Urban Meyer would not disclose the issue Henderson is having in Jacksonville but that has been a regular occurrence with that team the last few years. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, and running back Leonard Fournette are just a few big names the Jags have jettisoned for multiple reasons.

A first-round player on the trade block is different from the team quietly shopping the player. This leads me to believe a first-round pick will not be in play when talking compensation. I think the Jaguars would have to be asking for a second-round pick.

That is quite the fall for a player drafted in the top ten just a year ago.

The Cowboys could dangle so-called “trade bait” cornerback Anthony Brown who is technically a starter right now in Dallas and a third-round pick to see if that could be enough to pry him from Jacksonville.

Henderson has already been paid out a significant portion of his rookie signing bonus meaning the Dallas Cowboys would only be on the hook for about $7.5 million dollars in guarantees over the next three seasons. The team could also exercise his fifth-year option available on all first-round selections.

Henderson’s rookie year was so-so but it is not out of the norm to have cornerbacks struggle their first year in the league. His measurables fit what new Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is looking for. A six-foot-one corner who ran a 4.39 forty-yard dash is enticing.

Adding a player like Henderson to this group would give the Dallas Cowboys four legitimate cornerback options all just either rookies or in their second year in the league. The old men in the room would be cornerback Maurice Canady who is having a great camp and Jourdan Lewis. Lewis is entering the first of his new three-year deal but Canady is on a one-year rental.

Henderson in Dallas softens the blow of having any cornerbacks depart for a multitude of reasons. Those who think we don’t need any more cornerbacks should just remember the hysteria over the lack of corners on this roster just before training camp. I mean, we were all asking for the team to sign free agent cornerback Richard Sherman.

Cornerback is a position that I would not mind having multiple options to chose from. Henderson in Dallas should be a priority for the defensive starved Dallas Cowboys.
