Could the Dallas Cowboys really land Xavien Howard?
By Angel Torres
With $12 million in guarantees remaining this season, Howard would have $42 million guaranteed on the same cap numbers or just $1 million less in guaranteed money than Ramsey.
The player is guaranteed almost the majority of his deal but if you’re going to pay him that salary anyways if you keep him, why not give the player the security he wants all while getting a player at the top of his position for a significant discount.
Those are the types of salary cap maneuvers that can change a team’s trajectory in an instant.
Now for the compensation. Trading for disgruntled players who also want a new contract is often a kiss of death. Teams send massive amounts of assets to trade for players and then end up in the same predicament as the players’ former team. Jamal Adams’s situation in Seattle immediately comes to mind.
Landing Howard for a second-round pick is exactly where teams need to be. Anything more can set your franchise back a few years. The Dolphins are seeking a first and there could be a team that jumps at that chance. I would not be upset if the Cowboys acquired Howard for a first-round selection but anything more could be excessive.
Getting Xavien Howard would give the Dallas Cowboys probably the best set of ball-hawking defensive backs in recent memory. Pairing him with Diggs would allow these rookie corners to properly grow in a system rather than become its Achilles heel in forced action.
Howard could be using the Dallas Cowboys to drive up his contract numbers but if his statement is genuine in how he has asked for a contract revisal, Stephen Jones could get out from under the shadow he cast for allowing Byron Jones to leave via free agency.
Yeah, it wouldn’t be great to give up a first-round pick but landing the better of the current two Dolphin starting cornerbacks would give this team a legitimate chance at making some serious noise in the playoffs.
Keep an eye on this situation as this topic for the Dallas Cowboys could gain momentum.
