8 Cowboys you should watch during training camp this summer
Versatility is an underrated aspect to players today. If you can contribute at different positions and in different situations, you will be on the field often. That is what the Dallas Cowboys are hoping they have in defensive lineman Chauncey Golston.
He is not known for his pass-rushing but has been fantastic at stopping the run game with Iowa in the Big Ten Conference. While racking up 12 sacks in his last three seasons isn’t impressive by any means, his 127 tackles are.
The Hawkeye was invited to the Senior Bowl and showed off his versatility by dominating the edge and interior defensive line. Standing at six feet and five inches tall while carrying around 268 pounds, he has the size to play both.
It’s encouraging that owner Jerry Jones added a piece to help solve the team’s biggest issue last season (other than injuries). Dallas’ run defense should improve from their third-most yards per run given up last season. Golston being in the rotation along the defensive line should be one reason for that.
The Dallas Cowboys were ecstatic when they found out arguably the top wideout in the draft fell to them at 17th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. While the team boasted two wideouts coming off 1,000+ receiving yard seasons, they couldn’t pass up on CeeDee Lamb.
In his rookie season, the Oklahoma product played just as advertised. Had Dallas not fielded two WR2s along with a WR1, had their offensive line in casts, and a quarterback injury carousel, Lamb would have gotten more attention and would have eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards.
While he finished with 935 receiving yards, his 82 rushing yards give him 1,017 yards from scrimmage. So, technically he did eclipse 1,000 yards as a rookie.
Pro Football Focus listed the sophomore as one of their second-year breakout candidates. Somehow, having the best season for a slot receiver since 2006 means you haven’t broken out.
"“I think CeeDee is an excellent example of what you are looking for in your second-year player… He is very comfortable, very natural. CeeDee is definitely making that move you like to see in your second-year players.”"
Lamb is taking snaps at all four wideout positions, despite playing primarily out of the slot in 2020. The more snaps he takes during the offseason, the better he will be by Week 1. I must say, I cannot wait to see the fourth coming of the Dallas Cowboys No. 88 shine this upcoming season.
