The 3 best moves the Dallas Cowboys made this offseason
3. Focusing on defense in the NFL draft
Firing former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was the first step in improving the Dallas defense. However, much more had to go into making this unit better. As a result, the Cowboys focusing on defense throughout the 2021 NFL draft is likely one of the most positive things they did all offseason.
In the 2021 NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected six straight defensive players in rounds one through four. With those six picks, they drafted two linebackers (Micah Parsons & Jabril Cox), two cornerbacks (Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright), and two defensive line players (Chauncey Golston & Osa Odighizuwa). America’s Team selected all these players before they even took one offensive player.
The Cowboys probably realized just how terrible their defense was a season ago, Consequently, they likely knew that things needed to change for them to improve. Additionally, they ended the draft by selecting two more defensive players including defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna in the sixth round and cornerback Israel Mukuamu in the sixth as well.
Focusing on defense in the draft is what could really set this team up now and in the future. Hopefully, some of their picks do pan out and become future Pro Bowlers. However, it could be very encouraging for the Cowboys’ defense in 2021 that they added many new pieces including eight new rookies to compete.
