The Pieces Of The Defense

For a while at the beginning of the year, we all complained about the pieces. That was the right thing to do.

As a few of the pieces brought in the offseason were let go from the team, the defense started to get a little better, at least playing with some life. As it turns out, everything else has been too great to overcome and totally flip the narrative about this unit though.

The players can stay. Although they have all experienced some form of downturns this season, I believe that’s a function of the defense and complete team as a whole.

Each of the guys on the unit have all made splashes. That is from the guys we expect to do it, like DeMarcus Lawrence and Jaylon Smith, to the guys that were supposed to be auxiliary pieces but have become much more, like Aldon Smith, Randy Gregory, Trevon Diggs, and Donovan Wilson.

The pieces on the defense aren’t great yet, but they are fine. I think they deserve another year to see if they can put it back together after the volatility that was this season.

Nolan wasn’t the right pick and a change of scheme may have been an overreaction. What’s been done has been done now though and we must try to get back on track from here.

Nolan will be let go, because Jerry won’t admit he was wrong this fast by letting go of McCarthy. These are the things we must keep in mind as he sees his way out and as we look to get another guy in there though.
