Dallas Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott quick-passed it up on Sunday night, because that’s what the defense was giving him.

Coaching/Playcalling

This one is pretty cut and dry. When you are down by three points and you have what is almost assuredly to be a converted field goal attempt on your hands, you take it.

That is something that Mike McCarthy must surely learn from. Those are the mistakes we cannot have all season long. Hopefully, this first game is enough to show him a bit more, perhaps getting it out of the way early even.

massive coaching blunder, that is. The second part of this equation is this.

You still heard a ton of people who really need to go back and watch the film saying that all Dak Prescott does is dink and dunk. Well, when the pass rush is barreling down the line at you like a runaway brinks truck on the getaway from a holdup, you would probably get it out quick and short on most occasions too.

When Dak had time, he found receivers deeper downfield. When he didn’t have time, which was most of the night, he got it out quickly for a conversion.

If he stands back there to take sack after sack all game, you still aren’t happy, so he has to take what the defense allows. That’s our thing here.

Though McCarthy and Kellen Moore must continue to implore Dak to take what the defense is giving him, it is also their jobs to come up with at least a few ways per game to go outside of that and create your own big plays.

That’s what they must avoid this week. They must avoid flexing so much to the defense, that it doesn’t allow them to try to make the few splash plays needed to win the game if need be.

That’s what happened in Week One and rightfully so, with a pass rush like the Rams, but the Cowboys and their playcallers have to be better. They have to give Dak, the offense, and the entire team their best chance to win the game and they didn’t with their play-calling on Sunday.
