What if the Dallas Cowboys knew CeeDee Lamb would fall to them?

One other wrinkle

If Jerry Jones could really see into the future, he’d also know how good Diggs will end up being. As of now, he looks like he should at least be solid. But will he be a Pro Bowler? Who knows?

Of course, if Jones could see into the future, then the Cowboys would be the best team in the league. They wouldn’t have chosen draft-bust edge rusher Taco Charlton with their top pick in the 2017 draft. They might have traded up for Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl-winning quarterback  Patrick Mahomes instead.

But maybe we shouldn’t go down that rabbit hole. There are just too many insane permutations. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Kansas City Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins, both Pro Powlers taken in later rounds, could also be Cowboys.

Let’s face it. Seeing into the future is by far the best superpower. With it, we’d all have bought Amazon stock in 1997, Apple shares just before they released the ipod, and shares in Berkshire Hathoway back in the seventies. We’d all be trillionaires.

But perhaps we’re getting off the subject. None of this is possible. It’s obviously just a silly diversion. I hope it’s been fun though.

One last sobering thought: Even with this prescience, I doubt the Cowboys’ braintrust would have made a different decision early in the offseason for a few reasons:

  • Dallas is thrilled to have this cadre of receivers. Who wouldn’t be? I bet every quarterback in the league is jealous of Dak Prescott right now.
  • Byron Jones, despite being a true shut-down cornerback, only has two interceptions in his five-year NFL career.
  • Imagine the humiliation of throwing away a first-round draft choice on a one-and-a-half-year rental of Amari Cooper. It would have made the trade devastatingly one-sided.

In reality, this last factor may be the most important. No GM in the league would want to read the paper the day after giving up Amari Cooper. They’d be pummeled in the press. Humiliating really is the right word.

I think keeping Cooper would be the right decision anyway. What Cowboys’ fan in the world isn’t salivating at the thought of seeing Lamb, Cooper, and Gallup all on the field at once? It’s just too delicious! But yeah, humiliation is a powerful incentive too.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my silly idea. Anyone else have a crazy sci-fi notion involving the Cowboys? If so, leave it in the comments section below.
