Antwaun Woods (defensive tackle)

Dubbed the “human log” at training camp a few years ago, Woods has been the object of speculation for months. First, the Cowboys signed Pro Bowler Dontari Poe to his position (one-technique/nose tackle), plus another Pro Bowl defensive tackle in Gerald McCoy.

Then, they drafted another defensive tackle in Neville Gallimore in the third round of this year’s draft. With, another DT Trysten Hill, the Cowboy’s second-round draft choice from last year still waiting in the wings, none of this boded well for Woods.

As a two-year starter, he’d obviously been hoping the front office would sign him to a long-term contract. Instead, they offered him the only thing they had to: the $750,000 he was entitled to as an unrestricted rights free agent.

Woods didn’t want to sign it, so he’s been playing the waiting game. And that’s where things stood for months until Tuesday when Woods faced reality and signed his tender, according to Charean Williams at Yahoo Sports.

All offseason, there was speculation that even if he signed the tender, he might not make the team, what with the logjam at his position. But like Awuzie, Woods might find himself in a better-than-expected position.

He’s the only defensive tackle on the team that played significant snaps as a Cowboy last year. Meanwhile, Hill underperformed his rookie year, and was only even activated for seven games, finishing the season with five tackles.

And now, no one’s going to get much practice. Adding this all up, if it were you, who would you keep: the guy who fell asleep in meetings and barely played at all, or the guy who started and played well the last two years? Seems like an easy decision to me.
