Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie – CBs

The 2020 season is going to be extremely crucial for the secondary of the Dallas Cowboys. The team needs players to step up, none more so than the pair of cornerbacks drafted back-to-back in 2017.

With the free-agent loss of star cornerback Byron Jones and yet another change to the coaching staff, all eyes will be on this unit for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. So far, Dallas is trying to fix a long-time problem with sheer numbers.

Taking a look at the current roster found on the official website of the Dallas Cowboys, there are 12 players including Lewis and Awuzie listed as cornerbacks. Dallas also used two draft picks in this year’s draft to bring more competition to one of its most underperforming positions. Clearly, the organization is making this spot an open competition.

Both Lewis and Awuzie have shown signs of potential. In regard to Lewis, he has made some big plays despite the fact that the former coaching staff did not give him a ton of opportunities. Even though Lewis has only started six games over the past two seasons, he has posted four sacks, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and a touchdown in limited action.

No one should be more excited about the change in coaching than Lewis. Hopefully, he can continue to improve and see more time on the field in 2020.

With Awuzie, after a decent rookie year, his confidence seemed to soar in 2018. Awuzie looked the part of a solid starting corner on the opposite of the Pro Bowler Jones had become. 2019 was a far different year for Awuzie, however.

Whether it was the scheme or just a huge dip in confidence, Awuzie’s play suffered greatly last season. Even though he started all sixteen games, his playing time decreased as the year came to an end.

Both players are in the final year of their rookie deals. Both could be in their final days with the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas desperately needs both players to maximize their potential if this defense is to be what they hope it to be in 2020.
