Will the Dallas Cowboys finally land their safety this offseason?

Will the Dallas Cowboys upgrade the safety position or continue to devalue the position and try to get by with mediocrity?

The Dallas Cowboys have played a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the safety position. Their approach has caused us to fall in and out of love with certain players.

There have been plenty of opportunities for the Cowboys to acquire more than a stopgap player but they have not pulled the trigger. Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods have been serviceable NFL safeties, but Dallas needs this generation’s Darren Woodson.

There was their flirtation with seven-time Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas. During the 2018 NFL Draft, it was reported by multiple media outlets that the Cowboys were engaged in trade conversations with the Seattle Seahawks.

Dallas apparently could have had Thomas with the 50th overall selection. They opted to not only pass on him then but also during free agency the following year when they could have had him without parting with a draft pick.

This past season was more of the same. But this time the stakes were much higher.

Reports indicated that Dallas was willing to part with their 2020 first-round pick for  New York Jets young stud safety Jamal Adams. Although the deal fell through, there is hope Dallas will circle back and revisit this during the offseason.

The NFL draft does possess a variety of safeties that could intrigue the club. Possible first-round picks include safety Grant Delpit from LSU, Isaiah Simmons from Clemson, Xavier McKinney from Alabama, and Ashtyn Davis from CAL.

Leading up to and after the combine will spark much debate about these talented safety prospects. Dallas has several options as they own the 17th overall pick and could use various avenues to land this key defender.

This leads me to my dream scenario. I envision Dallas either drafting their highest-rated safety in the first round or trading that pick to New York for Adams.

Either way, the Dallas Cowboys simply cannot afford to let the opportunity to add a talented defender slip away. Whether through the draft or via a trade, the safety position must be address this offseason in Dallas. And I believe it finally will be.
