The Dallas Cowboys are now 3-0, the club’s best start in 11 years. Dare we dream this Cowboys team is for real? Dare we dream of the Super Bowl?

Dallas Cowboys fans worldwide were grinning on Monday. (Some still are.) Some of us have been standing a little taller, feeling our oats, a healthy, pinkish glow in our cheeks. Some no doubt have treated themselves to an extra fancy coffee drink or two in the morning, while others might have indulged in an extravagant lunch.

I’m sure many, many high fives have been exchanged, and more than a few toasts have been guzzled. The bottom line is that many folks are more excited about the Cowboys chances than they’ve been in a long time.

I think we were all excited in 2016. The Cowboys’ 13-3 record came out of nowhere, given their 4-12 performance the previous year. It was a heady season, this dramatic success out of the blue. But how many of us truly believed this exciting young team with the rookie quarterback would go to the Super Bowl?

It was kind of like dating a beautiful woman you know is way out of your league. It’s a wonderful feeling. But in the back of your mind, you know it’s not going to last, so you just go with it, not really thinking about the future. That was a lot of us in 2016. That’s definitely how I went through the season.

And last year? America’s Team was 3-5 at the midpoint. It was a miracle they made the playoffs at all. Taking the NFC East was practically an act of God after the miserable start. That’s what people love about sports. Sometimes, the unlikely happens, and it’s thrilling.

But did any of us really believe that young Cowboys squad would make it to the big game? We hoped. It could happen, we thought. We figured the odds of each individual game. We lived week to week, trying not to look beyond Sunday.

This year, however, is different.
