Question 3: What does the return of Jason Witten really mean to this team?

Whenever you add a first ballot Hall of Famer to your roster, it’s a good thing. Having Witten back in a jersey and helmet, instead of a suit and tie in the broadcasting booth is a win for the Dallas Cowboys. Just how much he will play or how he will be used, however, remains to be seen.

At the age of 37 and sitting out a full season, Witten cannot be expected to contend for his twelfth Pro Bowl selection. The Cowboys also have two other tight ends, twelve years or more Witten’s junior, that need reps and time to grow.

Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz need to push Witten into more of a mentoring role. If they are incapable of doing so, Witten will still give Dallas flashes of greatness but it’s not likely he has much more left in the tank. The tight end group is the only one on the offense with any intrigue. We’ll see how it all plays out over the next three to four weeks.
