Special Teams – The Return Men

According to the official Dallas Cowboys website, the depth chart has Jourdan Lewis listed as the starting kick returner while Tavon Austin is listed as the starting punt returner. This is the thinking that we will go with, however it is worth noting and including that Tony Pollard was an explosive return man at Memphis, and he will probably help share those duties for the Cowboys as well.

According to ProFootballReference.com, the Dallas Cowboys return men from 2018 in Cole Beasley and Tavon Austin were the numbers 50 and 62 ranked return men, respectively. According to ESPN.com, the most explosive special teams return came from neither of them as it was of 35 yards and at the hands of journeyman Deonte Thompson, who now plays for the New York Jets.

Plain and simple, the Dallas Cowboys must be better in this area, and if nothing more than to help take some of the pressure off of their offense.

Between the three mentioned potential return men, there must be splash plays made in the return game for either optimal field position or touchdowns.  It could have been Brett Maher the kicker, who hit 80 percent of his field goals on last season with a season-long field goal of 62 yards, but that was pretty good considering he was technically a rookie last season.

The lack of production in the past, along with a need for explosive plays as we progress through the future, is the reason why these three are the most important players of the special teams unit.

The Cowboys need all phases to completely come together to win a title, this season potentially and in any other. If they want to have the best chances at doing so this season though, these are the players that need to be the best or among the best on their individual units in order for them to have that chance.
