Five Dallas Cowboys players in preseason opener spotlight
By Brad Austin
#27 JOURDAN LEWIS (5’10, 195, CB)
The most consistent corner on the team in 2017 is now being treated like a second-class citizen. It’s beyond me how one of the best coverage players on the roster has been relegated to 4th in line at the position.
Anthony Brown is standing out in practice, much akin to two summers ago. But my memory isn’t foggy enough to forget his being demoted to the bench behind Jourdan Lewis just last season. It’s funny how actual game performance tends to reveal realities.
Tonight Lewis will get an extended opportunity to prove new secondary coach Kris Richard‘s preference for tall corners over better talent is a foolish endeavor.
#89 BLAKE JARWIN (6’5, 260, TE)
Did the Cowboys forget the previous holder of No. 89 was Gavin Escobar? Two years isn’t long enough to shake the memories of a bust who had the same traits of questionable blocking and hyped receiving skills.
Blake Jarwin has been lauded by the front office as the best receiver of the tight end group. Which isn’t saying much since only Geoff Swaim has an NFL reception (9). The bottom line is one of these guys must prove he can loosen a defense in pass routes.
Many Cowboys fans are hoping Rico Gathers steals the show. The reality is Jarwin is more likely to see regular season snaps, and his coming out party is sorely needed.
