They stayed true to their gameplan and selected the highest rated player on their board in linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. With that selection, the team grabbed a player at a premium position who not only filled a huge need, but was also set to go in the range of picks Dallas was selecting within.

More from The Landry Hat

In round two, the team was given a gift from the heavens when homegrown offensive line talent Connor Williams withstood the run on offensive lineman despite his first round grade. At pick fifty, the Cowboys were able to get their best overall pick in the draft in terms of need, value, and ability.

Round three provided Dallas with the icing on the cake.

The team needed to use a top one hundred pick on a wide receiver as it was their last remaining glaring need. The team’s patience in the first two rounds would be tested as the run on receivers was starting to build.

The team’s patience would pay off as the team was able to see that they would be able to land a receiver due to the sheer volume of receivers with a second to third round grade. The separation between the six to eight receivers after Atlanta Falcon’s wide receiver Calvin Ridley and Carolina Panther’s wide receiver D.J. Moore was nonexistent.

This allowed the team to lean on its strategy once again and select a guy who they brought in for a top thirty visit in wide receiver Michael Gallup. Gallup brings all the tools you look for in a system wide receiver. Great route running, reliable hands, speed and quickness with solid size. Making him another great pick.
