Round 2, Pick # 50
Connor Williams, OL – Texas

Pros

Williams would have been a lock for the first round if he could have come out last year, therefore talent is not a question.  Williams provides the Cowboys with options as he could thrive at guard, which is a need or be a solid right tackle.  He is certainly an upgrade over Jonathan Cooper and Chaz Green meaning that one of this team’s strengths is now stronger.

Aside from his actual ability, there also did not seem to be anyone else the Cowboys “should have” chosen instead.  It was an absolutely solid pick that, at worst, provides Dallas with a competent swing tackle for the next four years.  If you don’t think that’s important, go watch the tape from November 12 at Atlanta and get back to me.

Cons

The drop off in his play from his sophomore season to his junior year is a little worrisome.  Even though he was injured for most of the year, evidence of a dip in his play was apparent prior.  There is some concern that he peaked two years ago.

Final Analysis

Williams is, at minimum, a great kid who will work his butt off to be the best he can be.  While he may not ever reach the heights of Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick or Zack Martin, he should be a solid starter for many years.  Williams was the best available player at his position which is never a bad way to go when drafting.
