Why the Dallas Cowboys should sign Colin Kaepernick
Money
The fictional narrative surrounding Kaepernick and contract negotiations is he wants over $9 million per year. Assuming teams viewed him as a backup quarterback, this would give teams an out if they decided not to sign him. They could simply say that was too much money for a backup and move on.
The truth is these claims are completely false. Kaepernick is not asking for starting quarterback money this offseason. This was reported by Bleacher Report’s NFL reporter, Mike Freeman, who has been covering this story since last season. Furthermore, it was confirmed by NFL Network’s Steve Wyche and retweeted by Kaepernick.
To sign Kaepernick, it would most likely cost the Cowboys $6 million or less per year. This is likely because the market for backup quarterbacks has been around this salary. For example, the New York Jets signed former Cleveland Browns’ quarterback, Josh McCown to a one-year $6 million deal this offseason. Add in the fact he’s been on the market for awhile, Dallas could get him at a cheaper price.
The Cowboys also have gained $14 million in cap space last week, after the retirement of former quarterback Tony Romo. By using some of this added money to sign Kaepernick, they would be buying great insurance in the case Dak Prescott were to be injured.
