How the Cowboys can get the 4th pick right and wrong

Wrong: The Cowboys draft a quarterback

Tony Romo is easily a top-ten quarterback. He has been one for a long, long time.

Should the Cowboys go with Jared Goff or Carson Wentz with the fourth overall pick, the investment evaluation won’t be logged right away. Romo is here to stay. Pending a major injury strike, he’ll be playing at a high level for two to three more years.

Bringing in a quarterback is a must. It just doesn’t have to be decided with the first round pick. The incumbent will most likely come in to learn and be glued to a clipboard. Nothing is wrong with that.

Most analysts believe that this year’s top quarterback prospects will need time to catch up to NFL speed (Think an Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre configuration).

So why spend a highly coveted pick on someone who can’t impact the squad now, especially with other talents on the board who could shift the team’s gravity as soon as they don the Cowboys uniform?

Right: The Cowboys draft Jalen Ramsey or Myles Jack

If defensive back Jalen Ramsey is there, he is your man. If he is not there, then linebacker Myles Jack is your man.

If Jack is out, consideration for Veron Butler (DT) or DeForest Buckner (DE) is still on the plate. And there’s still Elliot, too.

The theme here is options. Ah. The luxury to pick fourth.

The defense needs to improve. There’s just no other way to put it. In order for the Cowboys to see a legit path to dive deep into the playoffs, the defense has to change.

Grabbing potential NFL superstars in Ramsey or Jack, who own real raw talent to shake up the football scene, is an absolute must for a team unable to do basic defensive functions such as apply quarterback pressure, do a thing called forced fumble, the other thing called a fumble recovery, and catch a football while playing defense.

Ramsey and Jack is the jump-start — in combination with the current defensive starters — that changes that.

Hopefully the phone lines cut out when the Cowboys select with their fourth pick. It’s time to draft, not trade.
