Is it time the Cowboys cut ties with Brandon Carr?

After another poor season with the Dallas Cowboys, and one former Cowboy speaking ill of his play, is it time the team parted ways with corner Brandon Carr?

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Everson Walls played 186 games in the league. He was a four time Pro Bowler, three time league interception leader as well as a Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants in 1990.

In nine years with the Cowboys Walls made 44 interceptions. 2016 will be Brandon Carr‘s ninth year as a professional. He has 14 career interceptions. It’s embarrassing to compare the two, and the Cowboys could do with even half the player Walls was on this team right now.

Carr signed with the Cowboys in 2012 after four years with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jerry Jones clearly expected big things from the 2008 draftee as he signed a five year contract worth over $50,000,000. With three interceptions in his first two seasons in Dallas he’s since gone back to back years without one. In fact, Carr’s most memorable moment is being floored by the one handed catch by Odell Beckham Junior in 2014.

After the final game of the season, Carr wasn’t drawn on where his future lies- be that with Dallas or elsewhere.

Carr is a senior voice in the locker room and reliable in terms of being fit to take the field- he’s never missed a start since turning pro. He’s the Cowboys nominee for this years Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Carr heads up his own charity “Carr Cares” and is a dedicated contributor to the local community in Dallas. There’s no argument that he’s a good guy, but his football has left a lot to be desired or more the price tag he arrived with carries expectations he’s failed to live up to.

During a radio interview this week, Walls waded in with his take on Carr’s performances this season.

"“It’s pretty bad. I talked about Claiborne. To me, he’s the most solid one that played last year. That’s sad really. He didn’t get any interceptions. He did make some plays on the ball a lot. A lot of incomplete passes came his way, but when you look at how he played, it made Carr’s play look even worse. I don’t think Carr tackled anybody or anything.”"

While Carr finished the year with the third most tackles on the team (behind Sean Lee and Barry Church) it’s hard to argue with Wall’s point. The Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need for a playmaking cornerback and unfortunately Brandon Carr is not that.

This off season it’s time for Jerry to get to work on a renegotiation of a deal for Carr or failing that look to move the veteran on. But it’s hard to see the Cowboys receiving much in return. Cutting Carr after 1^st June would be an easier chunk of cap to swallow with his Cap hit falling from $13 million to just over $4 million.
