Last Meeting: October 6, 2013

Like the team mentioned before, there’s really not much history between the Cowboys and the Denver Broncos, or at least not very much that anyone cares to remember as of late.

But there’s one game in particular that obviously stands out, which happened to be only the third meeting between these two teams ever.

Super Bowl XII was perhaps the best manifestation of the “Doomsday Defense” that Cowboys fans ever saw. Co-MVPs Harvey Martin and Randy White were unstoppable during a dominant performance that saw the Cowboys recover four fumbles and intercept four of former teammate Craig Morton‘s ridiculous passes. The 27-10 victory, the second Super Bowl win for Dallas, wasn’t anywhere near as close as it might look today.

If anyone around the country thought that Dallas was either washed up or simply a one-hit wonder as a world champion, they found out otherwise.

But that’s about where the fun stopped where playing the Broncos is concerned.

In fact, not until Dallas was again a perennial Super Bowl winner in the 90s were the Cowboys even able to beat the then-John Elway led team from Denver. Takeaway two Dallas victories in ’92 and ’95, both Super Bowl years, and Denver might have taken all nine games played between these two clubs since 1980.

In fact, Elway picked up only his second win against the Cowboys in 1998, his final season in the league and also his second straight sprint to a Super Bowl win to top off a Hall of Fame career. That game was a 42-23 route in Denver as the glory days of the 90s were officially over with.

The last meeting came in ’13 when the two teams combined for exactly 99 points in an epic 51-48 shootout in Texas.

The two teams will meet again at some point during the 2017, likely in Denver, a city that the Cowboys have only won in twice – ever.
