While Dallas Cowboysowner Jerry Jones has pretty much been asleep at the wheel during free agency, fans out there were still hoping that some quarterback news would be on the way. Yes, people are waiting on a Dak Prescott extension, but we're talking about Trey Lance in this case.

For a little while, there's been buzz that the former first-round pick could be on his way out of town via a trade. Lance had been linked with multiple teams earlier this offseason, including the Minnesota Vikings. However, thanks to recent deals made by the NFC North side, it feels like we can cross them off the list.

A Cowboys-Vikings trade for Trey Lance feels like it's off the table

First, the Vikings reached a free-agency deal with another former first-rounder, Sam Darnold. It's a one-year deal for Darnold, who is making his way to Minnesota from San Francisco. Could he be the new starter to replace Kirk Cousins, who is now with Atlanta?

Hard to say, but the Vikings now have two first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft thanks to their big-time trade with the Houston Texans. In case you missed it, Minnesota has received the No. 23 overall pick and No. 232 slot, while Houston has received a second-round pick, the No. 188 pick and a second-round selection for 2025.

With two first-rounders, No. 11 and No. 23 overall, could Minnesota use that as a package to sneak into the Top 3? The expectation is that four of the top six picks could be a quarterback, with Michigan's J.J. McCarthy now entering the conversation with USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels.

Let's be real here, if the Vikings want to make a trade to try and bring in a young quarterback, it will be for one of those four QBs mentioned above and not Lance. The Cowboys are still hoping to move the soon-to-be fourth-year signal-caller. Who knows? Maybe a new team can come in and offer up a mid-round pick for Lance, but the Vikings being in play feels like a long shot at this point.

Given Minnesota's purported previous interest in Lance and the fact Lance grew up two hours from U.S. Bank Stadium, the Vikings felt like a perfect fit. Now, the Cowboys in all likelihood have to go back to the drawing board.
