Is Dak Prescott the top quarterback from the 2016 NFL Draft?
The final answer
When comparing the three, I think Wentz is the number three quarterback from this class. He has had moments where he was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but injuries and his benching this past season hurt him too much.
Neither of the two other quarterbacks found the endzone as much as he has. Had it not been for the 2020 season, he could have been ahead of one player.
Jared Goff comes in at number two. He has been the healthiest, has the most playoff success, and the most passing yards among the three quarterbacks. Then again, he has played on the best team and with great coaches over the years. That makes his record and his stats look better.
What hurts Goff the most is the recent trade he was involved in, sending him to the Detroit Lions. For the price of Matthew Stafford, the Rams gave away Goff, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick.
It was more of a salary cap trade but showed the value of 26-year-old Goff compared to 32-year-old Stafford. The Rams and the Lions knew Goff’s success was a result of the team around him. Because of that, Los Angeles lost two premium draft picks.
At number one is Dak Prescott, the quarterback drafted much later than the other two. He has been the most efficient and has the best recent success.
What separates him from the other two a ton is his ability as a two-way threat. Dak has more rushing touchdowns than Goff and Wentz combined by six. Add to that over 200 more rushing yards than the second place Wentz.
The 2019 and 2020 seasons elevated Dak to be in the discussion for MVP in both years. Quarterback Lamar Jackson’s dominance in 2019 and Dak’s injury this past season put Dak’s hopes to a halt.
It’s also important to note that the Cowboys’ offense has been one of the best in the NFL since his emergence. Despite that, the defense has been unable to play well enough. Dak’s play has nothing to do with the failures of the team.
There should be no more comparisons between Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz or Jared Goff. The rest of the NFL and their fans will finally see what Cowboys fans have seen all along. Dak Prescott deserves higher praise, and he should receive that during the 2021 season.
