What do these ignored positions have in common?

What do these two positions have in common? Both nose tackles and safeties are often some of the best players against the run on the team. So, Dallas has skimped on both positions, and surprise, surprise, they’ve been weak against the run.

Safeties are also sometimes team leaders in interceptions. Dallas is short on those too. None of this is a coincidence.  It’s a choice.

I just find it strange. The Cowboys offense has been amazing this year, averaging 27 points a game. It’s the defense that’s been holding them back, especially the run defense, and the lack of interceptions.

It might just be that new Cowboy Michael Bennett might bolster the Cowboys’ run defense.  It also could be that Maliek Collins, Trysten Hill, Christian Covington, and other Cowboys defenders will play better as the season goes on.

But the Dallas head office had a chance to really bolster their run defense or to go get an elite safety. But they traded for another pass rusher instead. It looks to me that once again, they’re depending on hope as a game plan.  I hope it works too.  But I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.
