The second fix

Use the wide receivers appropriately

I’m tired of hearing about guys who are no longer here. To paraphrase Rick Pitino, Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten ain’t walking through the door.

You know who is here? Seven wide receivers.

More from The Landry Hat

You know why there are seven wide receivers on the 53-man roster? Because, contrary to Scott Linehan’s belief system, the Dallas Cowboys need a number one guy that they do not have.

In light of that, let’s use who we do have appropriately.

The Dallas Cowboys need to start using bunch formations to get the speedy Tavon Austin free. Bunch formations would highlight the route running precision of Cole Beasley as well. Incorporate a bigger receiver such as Allen Hurns in that bunch and now you can wreak havoc on defenses.

Using a bunch with these three in the grouping would give more opportunities to run-crossers which seem to make quarterback Dak Prescott most comfortable.

Every so often, a deep route out of the bunch from Austin or Deonte Thompson would at least scare an opposing defense. Meanwhile, you can put Michael Gallup on the opposite side to run slants, drags and in routes to further put pressure on linebackers in the intermediate middle of the field.

Beasley, Hurns, Gallup, Austin, and Thompson cannot dominate one-on-one, but you can scheme them open more and put their open-field talents to better use.
