The NFL Supplemental Draft will be held Thursday, July 12th beginning at 12:00 p.m. (CST). The eight players eligible for Thursday’s draft are DB Quaylon Ewing, Boise State, WR Josh Gordon, Baylor/Utah, FB Adam Harris, Syracuse, OT Adrian Haughton, Iowa State, LB Larry Lumpkin, Carson-Newman, DE Montez Robinson, Georgia, WR Houston Tuminello, McMurray , and probably the most talented of the eligible players RB Ed Wesley, Texas Christian.

RB Ed Wesley – Texas Christian University

Wesley shared the backfield duties last season with Waymon James and Matthew Tucker after his best season in 2010 with a team-best 1,078 rushing yards, earning First Team All-MWC honors. He leaves the college ranks with 2,442 career rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 10.9 yards per punt return on special teams. Wesley (5-9, 200) has good vision, anticipation and decisive movements as a runner, but isn’t overly elusive. He has battled the injury bug over his career, especially to his shoulder after missing three games last season. Wesley isn’t guaranteed to be selected in the Supplemental Draft, but he was considered a mid-to-late round draft pick after his junior season.

This Irving Texas native is the player I think the Cowboys should draft with a 5th round 2013 pick, he can help as a much needed punt returner on special teams and battle Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner for playing time behind star RB Demarco Murray, remember the Cowboys were stuck with picking up Sammy Morris during the December playoff run and that cost the Cowboys Big-Time down the stretch.

WR Josh Gordon – Baylor /Utah

Gordon began his career at Baylor, setting career-bests in 2010 as a sophomore with 42 catches for 714 yards and seven touchdowns. However his two-year stint with the Bears ended shortly before the 2011 season as he decided to leave the program after he was suspended indefinitely for an off-campus drug arrest. Gordon joined Utah and began practicing with his new team, but was forced to sit out last season due to transfer rules.

Dec 29, 2010; Houston, TX, USA; Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback Sean McGushin (13) tackles Baylor Bears receiver Josh Gordon (12) during the first quarter in the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

Gordon has tremendous speed and natural athleticism for his 6-4, 220-pound frame, but is still very rough around the edges as a receiver. He is a long-striding runner with the build-up speed and fluidity to make plays after the catch. Gordon is raw as a route runner and has only one true season of playing experience in college and that came in Baylor’s high-octane offense, catching passes from Robert Griffin III.

In 2010, Baylor’s top-three leading receivers were Gordon, Kendall Wright and Terrance Williams. Wright was drafted in the first round this past April and Williams is considered a possible first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. That leaves Gordon who has the athletic skill-set to be an early round pick, but his inexperience and questionable background will drop him down draft boards.

One NFC East team has already stated that they will use their 3rd round 2013 draft pick on Gordon and with RG III at the helm, It makes sense that it is the Washington Redskins, therefore, It will cost Dallas a 2nd round pick in 2013 to draft the troubled but talented Gordon, maybe too high of a price to pay in my opinion.

So be sure to enjoy NFL Draft Day Take 2 – As you can see above, some interesting talented but troubled players are available to draft on Thursday, but then again, what else is new in today’s NFL.
