Things We Learned about the Dallas Cowboys From a Meaningless Game

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to play the New York Giants on New Year’s Day, many fans are no doubt thinking that this is the most important game they have played since that forgettable loss to Minnesota in the 2009 playoffs.

As Mark pointed out earlier this week, it would be foolish to try to put too much stock into last week’s game against the Eagles. Mark was the first (to my knowledge) to point out that the Philly game seemed more like a pre-season game than a real game (take that ESPN and NFL.com!). Every reviewer since then has made the comparison to a pre-season game . That being said, I think there are a few things worthy of being noted from that game.

Four Big Questions Every Fan Should Ask Before the Cowboys/Giants Game

1. How will Tony Romo’s injury effect him during the game? Romo injured his hand early in the Philadelphia game on Saturday when it collided awkwardly on the helmet of defensive end Jason Babin. After a stint in the locker room, Romo appeared on the Cowboys’ sideline testing out his throwing hand. After a few test passes, it was determined Tony needed to sit out for the rest of the game. In retrospect, Romo admitted he would have tried to play if the game had any playoff implications.

X-rays of the hand turned out negative for signs of structural damage or fracture. According to Cowboys’ VP Stephen Jones, the immense swelling of Romo’s hand was caused by busted blood vessels. There is little doubt Romo will play in what has become the biggest game of the season for the Cowboys. But how will the soreness affect his throwing ability? (more…)

How the Dallas Cowboys Defense Will Stop the Philadelphia Eagles Offense

It is less than 24 hours from kickoff, so with no further adieu, we will get right to the question of the week.

Ben, San Antonio :How are the cowboys gonna stop the suddenly-hot eagles who are coming off of an offensive beat-down scoring 45 points vs The jets defense?

Mark Contreras: I don’t think they’re going to stop the Eagles. I think Romo and the offense are going to have to out score Vick and the Eagles and its gonna be in the 30s.. In fact, the game is going to look a lot like the Giants game two weeks ago in my opinion.. Just hopefully with a different ending. If the corners play as well as they did in Tampa, I might be wrong, but don’t call me crazy for being skeptical. If a FG kicker misses 13 times in a row and then makes the 14th, do you feel confident about the 15th kick? Me neither. Same goes for this secondary… I’m still extremely skeptical.
