One of the biggest losses for NFL players during the lockout is their ability to properly prepare for upcoming season. Rookies and players picked up in free agency will have limited time to learn their new schemes, thus making it harder for them to earn a spot on the team’s roster.

This is where commissioner Roger Goodell’s comments on roster expansion seem encouraging.

“I do believe that the uncertainty is something we’ll have to consider as it relates to getting players ready to play. One, from an injury standpoint, and two, from making the proper evaluations. We have talked about different concepts depending on how long it goes, that we may have to implement,” Goodell said when asked by Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports if the league would consider expanding team rosters.

Expanding rosters would not only be the smart move, but it is necessary. It will give new players a fair chance to make a career in the NFL and also set themselves up for a better shot at longevity. Please, commissioner Goodell. Do this one thing right and expand NFL rosters at the conclusion of the lockout.
