The Dallas Cowboys are trimming down their roster today to reach the 53 man roster limit the NFL wants met by 8:00 p.m. tonight. Yesterday, the names of WR Danny Coale, CB Josh Thomas, FB Shaun Chapas, LB Adrian Hamilton, QB Rudy Carpenter, LB Orie Lemon and WR Tim Benford were all leaked as players who had or would be cut from the team. This morning, ESPNDallas released more names leaving all but two remaining unknown players to be cut.

July 30, 2012; Oxnard, CA, USA; Dallas Cowboys tackle Ronald Leary (65) enters the field on opening day of training camp. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

The additional names of the players to be cut today are: DB Eddie Whitley, G Ronald Leary, T Pat McQuistan, T Jeff Adams, DB Teddy Williams, C Harland Gunn, G Daniel Loper, DE Clifton Geathers, DB Lionel Smith, DE Baraka Atkins, DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, TE Andrew Szczerba, DE Ben Bass, and WR Saalim Hakim.

The obvious names missing from this list might be more surprising then those on it. QB Stephen McGee and DE Marcus Spears were both speculated to be on the roster bubble. Also shocking is that not one of the five running backs on the team have been cut. They are DeMarco Murray, Felix Jones, Phillip Tanner, Lance Dunbar and Jamize Olawale.

Could the team be shopping one of them for a trade? It could make sense for a player like Felix Jones, who is in the final year of his contract. And it would also explain the delay in the release of one of them in an overpopulated backfield.

Regardless, the Cowboys still have two cuts to go before the deadline tonight. Dallas traded the Miami Dolphins a seventh round pick in next year’s draft for back-up center Ryan Cook late last night, hence an additional player release is needed.

Other names who could be on that cut list tonight include G Derrick Dockery, T Jermey Parnell, LB Isaiah Greenhouse, LB Kyle Wilber, and S Mana Silva.

Just like that, the Dallas Cowboys California based training camp is over, with the Cowboys arriving back in the DFW area Wednesday evening. They’ve played the first two preseason games in Oakland and San Diego respectively and now will play their final two in Cowboys Stadium in a span of five days starting this Saturday against the St. Louis Rams. (more…)

The inevitable happened Tuesday when long-time cornerback Terence Newman was released. Along with the release was a collective sigh of relief from Cowboys fans around the country. We all saw it coming, and yet who knew if the front office was going to make the correct decision and release Newman. We’ve been taken by surprise in the past. At the same time it’s always striking to me when a player that has been with the organization since they were drafted hits the trail. I guess it’s just the dumb kid in me that thinks players that have played good for the Cowboys in the past would spend their entire career with the team . So in turn it was hard for the kid in me to see him go, whereas the smarter version of myself knew the release was for the best.Newman played well for quite a while and served as the number-one corner on the roster during the majority of his stay here. What I am getting at is even though we’re all relieved to see owner and general manager Jerry Jones make the right decision for the good of the team, we still shouldn’t say good riddance to him. Here’s a few reasons why.
