With the NFL labor negotiations almost wrapped up and the most insane free agency period in NFL history just on the horizon, we are in the calm before the storm. By this time next week, things around Valley Ranch are probably going to look a lot different. It should be a fun week.

Obviously, re-signing Doug Free will be the team’s top priority, but they also must address a few other needs, like the safety position. More than likely, Gerald Sensabaugh will be back. That takes care of strong safety. But, the Cowboys needs someone to man the free safety spot, a position that has been inconsistent since the departure of Darren Woodson. (more…)

Going into April’s draft one of the biggest area’s of concern for the Cowboys and their fans was the secondary. Now as the lockout continues and the season remains on hold the secondary will still be a big question mark once free agency begins.

Another name that has been thrown out there in recent days as a possible targeted free agent is current Eagles safety Quintin Mikell.

Mikell is unlikely to resign with the Eagles once the lock out is over and would be a good fit with the Cowboys at safety. Mikell was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 by the Eagles, where he spent the first  4 seasons as a backup to Brian Dawkins and spent the last 4 season as a starter for the Eagles.

Though Mikell may not be the biggest name out there as far as free agents, he may be the most familiar with the Cowboys and he fits a need in safety a position the Cowboys are looking to improve on.

Mikell may not be a big name free agent, but the Cowboys maybe able to get him cheaper than they could another free agent and then be able to address other needs. I myself would like to see the Cowboys go after a big name and potentially better player such as Michael Huff  or Nnamdi Asomugha. I am sure Mikell is a good player but I just don’t know if I want the Cowboys to sign him when they maybe could get someone else who could be a better fit.
