At guard it looks like the front runner is Chance Warmack, while at safety the clear choice seems to be Kenny Vaccaro. The defensive line is still a huge need and while some names have come up it seems as though there are a plethora of options that can be taken in the later rounds.

I don’t think anybody can say that there is a clear cut easy decision to make with the 18^th pick this year. Do we trade up? Do we trade down? Do we draft for need? Do we draft the best player available? The questions go on and on.

I’ve always wondered how much stock scouts actually put into the combine. This past week didn’t seem to showcase any huge surprises but did have plenty of disappointments. Does that really have any impact on a player’s draft status though? I would think that a player’s game tape and resume would say plenty about what he’s capable of.

Take the 40 yard dash for example. My high school coach once told me it was the most useless and pointless number in all of football. He went on to say the only thing the 40 does is let you know how good you are at chasing people and that if you were chasing people then you would be using that 40 to run to the bench.

I mostly agree. Now I completely understand that speed is important, but some player’s can’t be measured by a number they have on one particular day. Some player’s run faster when the adrenaline is going. Some can’t run as fast with the pads on. And as my coach would say if you were doing your job correctly you wouldn’t need to use that straight line speed in most cases.

What I’m getting at is fast is fast, quick is quick, and strong is strong. None of these guys would even be getting a shot if they didn’t have insane potential to some degree. What I’m hoping for this year is that we draft one of those guys with the game changing ability that only his mental desire can bring. That’s what we lack.

Whether that be Chance Warmack, Kenny Vaccaro, Dion Jordan or any of the dozens of other rumored players coming to Dallas, I just hope he has “It”.

And that’s not anything that can be measured with a stopwatch.
