Updated: According to Pro Football Talk, this deal is far from over. In an e-mail to the players, De Smith said that the deal the owners ratified differs from what was negotiated. So, back at square one…again. More to come…

Finally, we have some tangible progress in the NFL labor negotiations. The owners voted 31-0 today in approval of the new CBA. Not surprisingly, Al Davis abstained from the vote. That’s probably because he’s not actually alive. Also, rumor has that this deal has a “Jerry Clause”, which allows for some cap leniency for overpriced veterans.

Part of the agreement requires that the NFLPA becomes re-certified as a union by July 26th. In the meantime, if the players approve the deal tonight. The season will start on the 27th and teams can start signing undrafted free agents Sunday at 2 PM. It also appears that this will be a 10 year deal with no opt out provision. An opt out is how this whole mess began. (more…)

There is hope that they can knock this thing out over the weekend. Then of course the players have to ratify the agreement. Also, it should be noted that both sides are under a gag order from mediator Arthur Boyle, so I'm not sure where all the information is coming from anyway. Regardless, there appears to be tangible progress.

Cowboys Lock-Out Watch — No Deal On Friday - The Landry Hat - The Landry Hat - A Dallas Cowboys Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.

Today, in the most unsurprising news ever, there was no official agreement reached in the ongoing NFL lock-out negotiations. But, they are apparently even closer than they were last night, which was apparently pretty close. There is hope that they can knock this thing out over the weekend. Then of course the players have to ratify the agreement. Also, it should be noted that both sides are under a gag order from mediator Arthur Boyle, so I’m not sure where all the information is coming from anyway.

Great news, folks. While it has been speculated the last few days, an agreement between NFL owners and players is well within reach. Mark Maske of the Washington Post wrote today that sources on both sides of the negotiations say a deal is possible within the next few weeks.

It is possible–but very unlikely–that the owners could vote on a labor deal at that meeting, said several of the people, who did not participate in the talks but are familiar with developments. It is more likely, they said, that owners could give negotiators their opinions and a deal with the players could be completed the following week.

A deal that week, just before the July 4 holiday, appears increasingly realistic, said people on both sides of the dispute.

The news is great for NFL fans. A deal by 4th of July weekend leaves more time for free agency, a supplemental draft and more time for official workouts. The team organized workouts are the most crucial as they allow more time for players to get familiar with their new teammates.
