The Dallas Cowboys have made a trade with the Miami Dolphins for former second round pick and veteran offensive lineman Ryan Cook. Dallas gave up a seventh round draft pick in 2013 to obtain the 29 year old. Cook started 40 games for the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Dolphins last season. He also started against Dallas in Wednesday’s preseason game.

The 6’6, 325 lb.Cook is expected to back-up Phil Costa at center this season. The previous back-up center, David Arkin, struggled over the preseason. And the entire offensive line has been decimated by injuries. So much so, new offensive line coach and offensive coordinator Bill Callahan has struggled to keep a consistent starting line on the field. Due to these injuries, lack of chemistry will most likely be a big problem for the Cowboys at the beginning of the regular season.

Rumors out of Miami are saying Cook wasn’t expected to make the 53 man roster cut later today. Apparently, the Cowboys weren’t willing to take a risk that another team would claim him off waivers. The seven-year veteran hasn’t started a game since 2008. And Cook is scheduled to make $1 million this season.

Cook has played every position on the offensive line, even tackle, but he is consider purely an interior lineman. He was a second round pick for the Vikings in the 2006 NFL draft after playing his college ball at the University of New Mexico. Minnesota released him in September of 2010 during their final cuts. Miami signed him just two days later. Cook’s younger brother, Eric, currently plays for the Washington Redskins, also at center.

I live in Southern California where the impact of Junior Seau’s death is relatively big. Many of my friends and acquaintances in these parts are San Diego Chargers fans and I shared my regards with them. Mostly shock, of course, with sadness and wonder why occupying much of the conversation. “What the hell”, “can you believe it?” and, mostly, “do you think it was that ‘concussion’ stuff former players are suffering from?” (more…)

When Dallas Cowboys Owner and GM Jerry Jones inducted Drew Pearson, Larry Allen, and Charley Haley in to the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor, it brought the total to 20 men (18 players plus Tom Landry and Tex Schramm) in the Ring.

Great Player, but don't think he should be in the Ring.(Credit: Manny Rubio-US PRESSWIRE)

I would argue that Jerry, prior to inducting Haley, had done a reasonable job of preserving the sanctity of the Ring. He hasn’t exactly been frugal with inductions: there were only 6 players in the Ring when he bought the club in 1989. But he hasn’t, at least until recently, done anything that would warrant accusations that he had cheapened the Ring.

One of the first polls I ever wrote for The Landry Hat was about whether or not Charles Haley deserved to be in the Ring of Honor. Over 60% of the people (less than 100) said he didn’t deserve to be in the Ring.

Although I had several reasons, one of the main reasons that Haley should not have been inducted into the Ring of Honor was that I felt that it was an insult to Harvey Martin. To read that argument, click here.

The Harvey Martin vs. Charles Haley debate got me thinking about what other Dallas Cowboys players should be in the Ring of Honor.

Who should be the next player(s) to be inducted into the Ring of Honor?
