I know what you’re saying Cowboy fans: “Here we go again. Another random mock draft pick for the Dallas Cowboys first round pick.” Well, not quite. Whenever ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. releases a mock draft, it’s an event and particularly newsworthy. Kiper’s latest mock was released on Thursday. Let’s see who he thinks Dallas will go with in the first round.

With the 18th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select…

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide guard Chance Warmack (65) in action against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish during the 2013 BCS Championship game at Sun Life Stadium.
Chance Warmack, Offensive Guard, Alabama.

Here’s what our experts say about Warmack:

Staff writer Reid Hanson believes Warmack will be gone by pick number 10 to the Tennessee Titans:

The Titans have major needs in the secondary but ultimately their need for a superior run game will trump all. They have long valued OG’s more than most teams and will have no problem selecting Chance and plugging him into the lineup immediately.

Staff writer Mike Burke would love this pick:

Center Barrett Jones of the Alabama Crimson Tide is probably my number one draft hope of 2013. If his linemate Chance Warmack fell to us though I’d do cartwheels down the street to add him.

Staff writer Chris Dietz sees Warmack going at #7 to the Arizona Cardinals:

Warmack is the best lineman from the best offensive line not only this season but in the history of college football. He is a large body and moves very well for his massive size. He is the perfect guy to build the new Cardinals offensive line around and will be a foundation for the offense for years to come.

Senior writer Jeff Magnia thinks the Cowboys will actually pass on Warmack and he’ll fall to the Chicago Bears at #20:

Warmack is probably the best interior lineman in the draft. He might go higher than this pick but I also see that Chicago might even trade up to get him. Protecting Jay Cutler is going to be the need for the incoming head coach, so expect something to happen between Warmack and the Bears.

If there exists a barrel which holds all of the interesting information and stories about the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, then we’ve reached the bottom of that barrel. Once the NFL Scouting Combine kicks into gear, the free agent signing period starts on March 13th, and then the draft in April, there will be a lot of interesting topics. For a writer, it will be a “target rich environment”. But, that’s not this week. So, here is a collection of thoughts or ideas to help get you through this NFL death valley period.

Dec. 4, 2011; Glendale, AZ, USA; Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones prior to the game against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.
1. GM Kudos (Not) - Although the Cowboys have somewhere around $20 million in cap space in 2012, they also reportedly enter this league year with $24.5 million in “dead money”. That is money that counts toward the salary cap for players that are no longer on the team and is by and large a measure of the number of “mistakes” that have been made managing personnel and the salary cap. The league average this year is somewhere around $4.65 million per team – the Cowboys are 5 times that. Ouch! Nice job Jerry!
