Here we go again. A scant 3 weeks ago we were talking about a must-win, Sunday night game against the Giants, and a chance to win the division and essentially lock up a playoff spot. Nothing much has changed at this point except that this time the game will be in New York (New Jersey actually) and it absolutely means win or go home. The winner will finish the regular season at 9-7, wins the NFC East, and the #4 seed in the playoffs including a home playoff game the following week. The loser will finish 8-8, watch the playoffs from their couch, and face an off-season full of doubts and questions.

Heading into this rematch, you can absolutely throw out last week’s game against the Eagles. It tells you nothing about our chances to win this week. The game was meaningless once the Giants beat the Jets, and as hard as it is to admit, the Eagles are just not a good match-up for this year’s version of our Cowboys. We did a much better job stopping the run this time around, but Vick was hardly pressured at all; he picked our suspect secondary apart with ease. If not for a fumble that rolled out of the end zone and a late blocked punt, it easily could have been a 27-0 blowout on top of the 34-7 pasting they already laid on us. The only satisfaction we can take from that game is that despite sweeping our season series, the Eagles are assured of sitting out the playoffs. (more…)

Without a wide receiver drafted this weekend, it seems Jerry Jones is banking on Terry Glenn as the receiver who will take some of the pressure of Terrell Owens.

Forget about trades and rumors and the “what ifs” because right now, all we have is Terry Glenn and Patrick Crayton.

We’ve all talked since Sunday afternoon about how the Dallas Cowboys passed on Mario Manningham and Andre Caldwell for some unknown reason. But am I the only one who realizes just how important it is to provide another threat on the other side of Owens?

Without that threat, decent opposing secondaries have a much easier time adjusting to the player who seems to be on the streak. Remember, the Cowboys were largely a second half team for most of the season, but that fizzled as the season continued because other teams were able to adjust to the Cowboys game plan.

Keep in mind that Jason Witten was the most important player for that offense, because he opened the field up for Owens. When defensive backs decided to double up on Owens, Witten had some big games. But teams were able to adjust and double whomever they had to in crunch times. That’s why having a second wide receiver is very important to the Cowboys success.

Glenn returned for two games last year, two very uneventful games. He did take some hard hits, but he was a non-threat.

Patrick Crayton took his place for the season, and although he performed well enough to get a contract extension, he left us with a very sour ending when he missed a game-ending touchdown against the New York Giants in the playoffs. A bit of irony that the Giants end up with Manningham, don’t you think? I thought that single Crayton play is what made all of us, and columnists, say that wide receiver was a must-draft position this year. Crayton is not as clutch as we would like him to be. I hate reviewing the tape of the play because it looks like he just stops his route. He quit. There’s nothing more irritating than seeing that happen.

Glenn doesn’t do stuff like that. He’s a hardworking receiver who has made clutch catches for the Cowboys in the past. What we wonder is if his knees can hold up. If they do, then I can see the Cowboys holding up their record sixth Lombardi Trophy.

That’s why the Cowboys are banking on Terry Glenn. Get your pennies out.

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys gave up on Day 2 of the draft by trading away every third and fourth round pick it had up to the middle of the fourth. I got so frustrated watching wide receivers Mario Manningham and Andre Caldwell, safety/corner Reggie Smith and Justin King fall off the board that I decided to call it a day and go do laundry. Yeah, I decided to do laundry over watching the NFL draft.

You know, when Dallas lacked a real good drafting coach they went through some of the worst picks in the team’s history. When Bill Parcells came in, he helped draft a solid core of guys that brought success to the Cowboys. But now that pushover Wade Phillips is the surrogate coach, Jerry Jones is running a majority of the draft board. Jerry Jones’ famous pick was Quincy Carter. Wow. Scared? Maybe that’s why the Cowboys traded away the rest of their picks. Jerry Jones should not be running the draft board. He’s not a talent scout.

The first three picks are solid players, even though choosing Martellus Bennett was somewhat confusing. However, we seem to be warming up to the pick as each hour goes by because the guy is a solid athlete.

Will this draft go down historically as Jerry Jones other big screw up, when we see Manningham turn into a star for our rivals in New York?

Or does Jerry have something up his sleeve–because we certainly saw NO SURPRISES that we expected and that he dangled at us like carrots–to acquire one of the disgruntled receivers who want out of their perennial losing teams.

I don’t think eight late-round picks is going to help the Cowboys acquire anyone. At that point in the draft, it is a crap’s shoot.

At pick 122, Dallas chose running back Tashard Choice, who ESPN called one of the “most prolific runners out of Georgia Tech.” I’ll research the pick later. But right now, I’ve got to air my dirty laundry somewhere else.
