Evidently, the Dallas Cowboys like a challenge. So much so, they waived corner back Bryan McCann today to add to their defensive backfield troubles. The thought process behind this move is mind-boggling. Is the Andrew Luck lottery in play here? I’m kidding, of course…or am I? (conspiracy theorists, start your engines!)

McCann was not only one of our few healthy corner backs, he was also our primary return specialist, our gunner on punt return coverage and a key member of the kickoff coverage team. McCann had some big plays for the Boys last season including a 97-yard punt return and a 107 yard interception. Now he’s gone. WTF?

The defensive backfield looks like the opening scene from the movie Saving Private Ryan. Terence Newman hasn’t played in seven weeks due to a groin injury. Orlando Scandrick is hobbling around in a walking boot with a high ankle sprain. And Mike Jenkins is hurting from the mid-chest up. Newman announced on Twitter that he’s back this week. I certainly hope this is true because the only healthy corner we have now is newly acquired Frank Walker. Still, the release of McCann makes no sense. (more…)

Cowboys make release of Marc Colombo official

Along with the players that were expected to be cut, the Cowboys officially parted ways with Marc Colombo today. This is not really news — it was already reported once — but there was some question about whether the ‘Boys would officially release the tackle or if they would restructure him and keep him for depth. His return for a cheaper contract is not out of the question. With the subtraction of Davis and Colombo, the Cowboys will have to add some depth to the line. A cheaper Colombo would be a great fit.

Doug Free Staying With the Cowboys

Last night, despite reports that the Cowboys were in an expensive “dog-fight” to maintain the services of Doug Free, the ‘Boys locked up the emerging tackle to a very reasonable 4 year, $32 million dollar contract with $17 million guaranteed. All the worrying was a waste of energy. We should’ve known Jerra would get it done. He rarely loses one of his own.

The price tag on Free was far lower than expected. If they had put the franchise tag on him, it would’ve cost them around $10 million this year. Obviously, the average on this current deal is lower than that. Not to mention, four years is not an over-sized commitment. In NFL terms, Free is a young twenty-seven. He doesn’t have a lot of wear and tear, so the Cowboys should be getting four prime seasons from him.

It only took one day for the Cowboys to lock-up their top priority. Not only that, but they cleared a ton of cap space by cutting Roy Williams, Leonard Davis, and Marion Barber. Things are going according to plan and it’s safe to expect a few more big additions in the next week. (more…)
