There are roughly a bazillion reasons why the Dallas Cowboys humbly hold a 5-6 record eleven games into the season. Previously discussed explanations for the sorry state of the Cowboys has ranged from their pitiful offensive line, their inconsistent QB play, dismal running game, special teams failures, no accountability, and no Will to Win. While these reasons are all true (some more than others), maybe the problem dates further back. Maybe it dates back to front office decisions made years ago.

Alright Cowboys fans! Let’s get out our magic crystal ball and take a look into the not-too-distant future. Who do you project to be the most valuable player at the end of next season? I know a question like this is impossible to get right. There are always the surprise players that do better than what we could have anticipated along with the crafty veterans that we had almost written off. The two that come to mind that would fall under these categories respectively would be Sean Lee and Kyle Kosier.

If you would have asked me at the beginning of last season if these two would have done as well as they had I would have probably laughed in your face. Sean Lee at the time was a huge question mark because of his injury history and I did not know if he would be able to learn a new defensive scheme in time to make any sort of impact on the field. I was wrong there.

Along the same lines I did not believe Kosier could stay on the field for any stretch of time either. My other concern was if he had enough left in the tank to make an impact on the offensive line. I felt like they let the wrong guy, Leonard Davis, go before the season, and that it should have been Kosier instead. Again I was wrong, to a certain degree. Kosier successfully transitioned from left to right guard in order to help out rookie right tackle Tyron Smith with line calls and protections. By being able to do these two things, along with executing his own blocking assignments, Kosier proved to be more valuable than I would have originally suspected.

Despite what some people are saying, the Cowboys as a team are not in rebuilding mode. However, their offensive line is in the middle of what appears to be a two year overhaul and is definitely a work in progress right now. They are set at the tackle position with Doug Free and Tyron Smith. Naturally, Andre Gurode is the center — as long as he’s healthy. That leaves the guard position as the big question mark. We know that Kyle Kosier will be one of the starters, but we don’t know for sure which side he will play. And, the even bigger question mark is who will be the other starter.

So far this preseason, Bill Nagy, Phil Costa, and David Arkin have all seen time with the first team, with Arkin receiving the most plays. The guy we haven’t seen at all is Montrae Holland and he was the frontrunner once they cut Leonard Davis. But, maybe it’s time the Cowboys moved on without Holland. When he’s in decent shape, Holland can be a serviceable run-blocker, but he’s pretty atrocious when he’s protecting the quarterback. He’s strong, but doesn’t move well. And, even though he’s a decent straight ahead run-blocker, he isn’t quick enough to be an effective pull guard. That limits what the team can do on offense. If they can execute on traps and counters this year, Felix Jones will have a huge season. (more…)
