The top pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, and someone who many consider to be the biggest bust in NFL history, now wants back into the league. JaMarcus Russell, the former LSU star and Oakland Raider quarterback is attempting to make a comeback. Could the Dallas Cowboys organization be his perfect landing spot?

JaMarcus Russell is looking to make a comeback to the NFL. Photo: Brett Davis/US Presswire

The 27 year-old Russell is working with former NFL wide receiver and LSU alumni Mike Clayton to get back into game shape. He’s also scheduled to work with many different trainers including former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia and NFL Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk.

The 6’6 framed Russell is currently tipping the scales at 308 lbs. He’s claimed he has lost 12 lbs. since beginning his quest. But it’s not just being out of shape which could further complicate his comeback. In July of 2010, Russell was arrested for possession of codeine syrup without a prescription.

During his three year career as the quarterback for the Raiders, Russell recorded 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. His career completion percentage was 52.1, racking up 4,083 passing yards with a quarterback rating of 65.2. He lists his reasons for wanting to return to the NFL as a rekindled love of the game and that he wants to prove to people that he is not “a bust”.

The Cowboys currently have quarterbacks Tony Romo and Kyle Orton very much entrenched on the roster. Romo is in his final contract year and it is expected that the Cowboys will attempt to sign him to an extension before the end of the season. Hi back-up, Orton, is in the second year of a three year deal.

Russell would have to compete for the third string quarterback position on the team’s depth chart. He could potentially be seen by owner and general manager Jerry Jones as a future project who wouldn’t even see the field for at least two years. That might be exactly what Russell needs at this point. Sitting under two great veterans and learning the system, much like former Cowboy quarterback Stephen McGee did before being released last year. McGee has subsequently been signed by the Houston Texans.

But would having Russell on the roster be too much of a distraction for the fragile Cowboys? Or perhaps even unhealthy for a roster of players who have seen their fair share of negative publicity recently. Place your vote below and feel free to respond on our comment section.

Buy Low: Kyle Orton. At some point Tony Romo will miss some time due to injury. Buy this stock to ensure good returns at the quarterback position in that event.

Sell High: Ernie Sims. Ernie rose from his couch to play well in replacement of injured inside linebackers, Sean Lee and Bruce Carter. These guys will be back next year, so let’s get what we can for Sims.

Buy and Hold: Anthony Spencer. This stock has been paying high dividends in 2012. Sell the farm to buy more of it in 2013.

Dump These Stocks: When you pay too much for a stock that continues to dive, all you can do is sell it for a loss. Can I interest you in some shares of Doug Free? No, how about Kevin Ogletree?

Wait and See: Might want to hold onto Lawrence Vickers stock to see if it increases in value. Due to going to the pass 100% to get back into games and the extended absence of DeMarco Murray, we are not sure what we have here and need to take a wait and see position.

Hold With Caution: The high value stock of Sean Lee and Bruce Carter was worth the price based on performance in games. We just need to see if we can get a full season out of them.

Nov 18, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys guard Nate Livings (71) and tackle Tyron Smith (77) on the line of scrimmage during the game against the Cleveland Browns at Cowboys Stadium. The Cowboys beat the Browns 23-20 in overtime. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Dump it Now: All offensive lineman not named Tyron Smith. It’s time to take our lumps and start over. Perhaps we can find some good value in the draft.

Poised to Take Off: Tyrone Crawford, Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley. Invest in these stocks now for a big payoff in coming years.

Trading Suspended List: Cannot sell these stocks until the suspension on trading is lifted. This is everyone on injured reserve and that’s quite a list.

Not much can be said that hasn’t already been said. Monday night was a disaster this week and that’s pretty much all there is to it. To not sing a song that has already been sung a million times let’s just get down to it.

I can already hear the angry mob running down the road with pitchforks in hand calling for the head of Tony Romo. This is a topic that’s been debated for years now and honestly it needs to stop. Is Kyle Orton really the answer? He wasn’t good enough for the Bears, or the Broncos, or even the Chiefs last year. He’s a backup for a reason and it needs to stay that way. Do I feel comfortable with him coming in if Tony goes down with an injury? Yes. Do I feel comfortable with him as the official starter over Tony Romo? No way!

Oct 1, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) leaves the field after throwing an interception for a touchdown during the third quarter against the Chicago Bears at Cowboys Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

Let’s not beat around the bush on this thing and just get it all out there. I’ve seen this movie before. In a nutshell this is what would happen. Orton becomes the starter. He has one or two great games to start off. Now here’s the climax of the film. The wheels completely fall off. We finish the season missing the playoffs and fans will be outraged. We can’t very well go back to Romo because that ship will have definitely sailed. Looks like the post-Aikman quarterback solicitation all over again. Quincy Carter anyone?

Tony Romo had a horrible game, that’s a fact. He’s had several bad games over his career, that’s a fact. Well here’s a news flash for you people, it’s football, it’s not an exact science, you will lose games and some will be ugly. I sure hope I didn’t give a heart attack to anyone with that riveting revelation.

I absolutely love how everybody becomes a football expert when the Cowboys lose. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in no way defending Romo’s performance on Monday, that was absolutely disgusting. I am saying though that if we are going to get angry and call for accountability then let’s be fair about it.

What about Dez Bryant’s multiple momentum killing dropped balls? What about the lines inability to hold a pocket consistently? Where’s Demarco Murray been? What about the defensive line being incapable of creating a rush against an offensive line that has been under fire almost more than the Cowboys’? Did anyone else notice Brandon Marshall shred our ”#1” defensive secondary?

The list could go on forever. Why isn’t Jason Garrett or anybody else on the coaching staff being held accountable for anything? If we’re going to be angry then let’s at least be angry about the right things folks.

I don’t expect this article to change anybody’s mind because the fact of the matter is there are only two types of Cowboys fans, those who have faith in Tony Romo, and those who gave up on him after the Seattle debacle in 2006.

The season is young and the last time I checked two out of two isn’t the end of the world, or at least I don’t remember that being in John’s book of Revelations. It was a bad game we all know that but let’s stop with all the insanity please.

The only immediate solution I can think of to get these guys on track to the Super Bowl is to start Sean Lee at every position. I know not a single person would disagree with me on that. Other than that all I can say is the benching of Tony Romo is not the answer.
