By: Joe D.

I had the displeasure to spend the day in Philadelphia today. Sports talk radio focused on baseball, but they did take their opportunity to express their desire to move past the Donovan McNabb era. I FULLY SUPPORT THEIR DESIRE! I know McNabb isn’t the best QB in the league, but he certainly has given the Cowboys trouble over the years. Even when the Cowboys beat the Eagles, McNabb escapes countless number of sacks and prolongs plays.

Currently the Eagles have Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick on their roster and both are signed through the end of 2010 season. I don’t believe their is a clamoring for Vick to take over as a full-time QB, but Kolb played well in his stints when McNabb was out with a rib injury. I won’t prognosticate on how Kolb will turnout – he could be good, or he could be just plain awful. Kolb played very well in 2009, logging 391 and 327 yard passing in his two games as starter. Here’s what everyone ignores, those games were against the Saints and the Chiefs. The Saints had a fast start and began the season 13-0. Their defense was susceptible to giving up large chunks of yards at a time in the passing game, finishing as the 26th best passing defense in the league. As for the Chiefs, they were the 22nd best passing defense in the league and they improved greatly over the last half of the season. Kolb played them in the 3rd week of the season when the Chiefs were simply a mess.

So why will I be using my birthday wish to make Eagles fans elated? Because Kolb is the cute girl at the end of the bar who is giving the “sexy eyes”. It’s all potential and zero substance. Kolb played well against two questionable defensive passing teams. In the previous year against a good defense, Baltimore, Kolb threw for 73 yards, less than 50% completion rate, and 2 interceptions. I’ll give him a pass as it was his first action of the season, but if I were the GM of the Eagles, I would not fall in love with the unknown, or at the very least, unproven.
