Police were notified early this morning by the mother of the slain girlfriend who stated that her daughter had been shot several times at a location approximately five miles from the Chief’s practice facility. Police then received a call from that facility approximately 20 minutes later and arrive on the scene to find a black man in a car holding a gun to his head, while talking with two team officials. That is when the player shot himself.

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport ‏tweeted: “According to KCPD, Scott Pioli, Romeo Crennel talked with the player before he shot himself. He thanked them. “They didn’t feel in danger.”

Belcher was a four year veteran for the Chiefs, who started in 10 of 11 games this season. The native out of Long Island, New York went undrafted out of the University of Maine, but signed with Kansas City in 2009. He recorded 80+ tackles in his last two seasons and just resigned with the Chiefs in March.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted morning - “Chiefs players are being asked to assemble at the team facility for a meeting regarding the situation.”

It is unknown how this will effect the upcoming Chief’s home game as they are scheduled to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant in 2010 to be their number one wide receiver. Three years later, all they have is a problem child with a low football I.Q., maturity issues, and the talent of Jerry Rice. Dallas still needs a number one wideout and they could have one in Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe.

Aug 24, 2012; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (82) is unable to catch this past against Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman (25) in the first half at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

Bowe is a six year veteran, who just turned 28 last month, and he’s a bona fide number one receiver. Taken by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft (23rd overall), Bowe has been the lone bright spot on a dismal Kansas City receiver core. He’s averaged 60 receptions a year with absolutely no one throwing to him. Bowe is on the trading block because he is in the final year of his current contract. In August, he signed a one-year, $9.515 million deal.

The younger Bryant has all the talent of Bowe, but still just doesn’t “get it” mentally. Whether or not he ever will is something most Cowboy fans are still desperately clinging too. Statistically, Bryant is having his best year with 41 receptions in just seven games. And it could be that he would flourish with a new team, away from the Cowboys’ spotlight. (See Jimmy Smith or Antonio Bryant for proof) Salary-wise, Bryant is signed through 2014. Back in 2010, he signed a five-year, $11.8 million deal.

Looking at the Dallas salary cap, the Bowe deal could work. Pro Talk Football reports the Cowboys’ salary cap to be $5.7 million as of September 2012. It might be a tight fit depending on how much Bowe is still owed in his current contract.

But Dallas desperately needs a mature number one receiver. Despite his efforts, Miles Austin is a far better slot receiver than a number one. And Bryant is simply not on the level required to fill that role yet. Bowe would be an instant upgrade. There is no doubt it would help Tony Romo’s interception numbers.

In turn, Bryant would be a big “get” for the Chiefs. Kansas City would be getting a talented young wideout for almost nothing. The team was apparently hoping to get a third round compensatory pick in the draft with the exit of Bowe next year. Instead, they’d be getting their wideout of the future.

Currently, Chiefs are looking to get a second round pick or higher for Bowe. It’s a tough sale due to his high salary and expiring contract. But Jerry Jones may be at the point where he is ready to cut bait with Bryant. And getting Bowe now may help turn the tide of Dallas’ current situation. Getting him to stick around after this season is probably the only other sticking point.

The Dallas Cowboys’ training camp is now well under way in Oxnard, California culminating in it’s first official “Blue and White” scrimmage over the weekend. Two of the biggest highlights from said scrimmage have to be the interception made by free agent acquisition corner Brandon Carr, on a toss by quarterback Tony Romo, and the six touchdown passes thrown by his back-up, Kyle Orton. Did you hear much about Romo outside of the interception? Not really. It seems it’s just business as usual for Romo as far as the media is concerned. And that could mean trouble in the future…Tim Tebow sized trouble.

July 30, 2012; Oxnard, CA, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Kyle Orton (18) throws during opening day of training camp. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

Hear me out here. There is no quarterback controversy is Dallas. Zero. Nada. Everyone agrees, Romo is the starting quarterback. But I’ve always wondered something about Orton. Why would he come to Dallas to back-up Romo? Why would he come here when he could compete for a starting job somewhere else? After this weekend, the seed of a thought crept into my brain. Did Orton actually come to the Cowboys to get a starting job?

Last year, Orton started his third straight season in Denver. He had the starting job going into the season with incumbent Tebow on the bench. (an alleged fourth string QB in the preseason) But a 1-4 record and a million chanting Tebow fans later, and Orton was on the pine and soon released. I could understand, after suffering an embarrassment like that, wanting to go somewhere that had zero controversy. After playing out the rest of the season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Orton signed with the Cowboys almost immediately, right out of free agency.

When the news hit that we secured the best back-up in the league so early on, I was ecstatic. But a few questions did linger in my mind. Why did Orton sign so quickly without fully researching his starting options? And if he did just want to avoid controversy, why sign a three year deal? Orton is 29 years old. He’s in his prime years to start. Why sign a contract to be a back-up until your 33? The answer is simple: Orton sees a future in Dallas.

July 30, 2012; Oxnard, CA, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee (7), quarterback Kyle Orton (18), and quarterback Tony Romo (9) talk during opening day of training camp. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

But what that future is, only Orton knows. But let’s not forget that Romo is 32 years old. His contract runs out in 2013 due to a restructuring from last summer. And owner Jerry Jones’ patience, along side most of Cowboy Nation, is wearing more than a little thin. Many see this as Romo’s make or break year. But did that have anything to do with Orton’s quick decision to play in Dallas?

Romo is coming off the best statistical season of his career. But let’s not forget that Orton was coming off two great statistical years before being benched. In 2010, Kyle threw for 3,653 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. The year before he had 3,802 yards with 21 touchdowns. But two straight years of not making the playoffs cost him in the end. Sound familiar?

Is Orton pulling a Tebow in Dallas? Who knows? I do know this. If Dallas starts the year off at 1-4 or fails to make the playoffs again, it won’t be Tebow’s name some Cowboys fans will be chanting. It will be Orton’s. And wouldn’t that just be ironic.
