How does the Joey Galloway trade of 2000 stack up against the Roy Williams' debacle?

This week’s release of Roy Williams signals a dubious ending to what could possibly be seen as the worst trade in Dallas Cowboy’s history. Unfortunately for Cowboy fans, this incident doesn’t mark the first time the team has made a major sacrifice for what turned out to be a mediocre Wide Receiver.

Looking for a player to replace the Hall of Fame bound Michael Irvin, the Cowboys traded their 2000 and 2001 first round picks to the Seattle Seahawks for speedster Joey Galloway. In a turn of cruel foreshadowing, the former Buckeye Wide Receiver torn his ACL in his very first game as a Cowboy. Therefore, Galloway was out for the entire season due to the injury. In his four years with Dallas, Galloway never had more than 61 receptions and 6 touchdowns in a season. In 2003, he was traded to the Tampa Buccaneers for Wide Receiver Keyshawn Johnson.

But to feel the full impact of this disastrous trade on the franchise, you have to look back at the draft ramifications. The Seattle Seahawks used the Cowboy’s first round draft pick in 2000 to select Running Back Shaun Alexander. The Alabama alumni would eventually win the MVP award in 2005 and also lead his team to a bid in controversial Superbowl XL. He certainly would have made a nice addition to a Cowboy’s roster looking to replace an aging Emmitt Smith in the downward spiral of his career. (more…)

Goodell’s letter to Jones says Jones’ “disturbing pattern of behavior was clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL.”

This is another lump in an already horrible week for the Dallas Cowboys. We’ve already discussed the myriad injuries on the team, and Pacman sort of breaks the iceberg.

A light of hope, if you can call it that, is that Jerry Jones is having intense conversations with the Detroit Lions on trading for wide receiver Roy Williams. The Lions are out of their mind though if they think they will get a 1st round pick and more for Williams.

The Lions have been demanding a first-round draft choice just to consider a deal, and it is not known if Jones is willing to make the trade at that compensation level. The Cowboys could offer a second- and third-round pick, since they have multiple choices in the third round.

Other NFC teams are also in the hunt for new playmakers.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, attending the meeting of league owners, reported that the Cowboys’ NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles have also made inquiries about Williams’ availability. While one GM said there was a strong possibility the Lions would trade Williams to the Cowboys or Eagles on Tuesday, Philadelphia is believed to be more interested in Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez. The New York Giants and Green Bay Packers are also pursuing a deal with the Chiefs.

The Cowboys have a recent bad history of trading a No. 1 pick for a decent receiver. Joey Galloway was riddled with injuries and never panned out in Dallas.
