It was the fall of 1991 and I was eight. I am willing to bet a lot of money that I was probably the only eight year old girl on the block who wanted to play NFL football when I grew up. To really get the irony of the situation you have to realize that I am a mid-west girl and the game of baseball ruled my family. I was a little girl from Michigan who believed Troy Aikman & the Dallas Cowboys ruled the world.

Nov 11, 2012; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Troy Aikman (R) talks with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) during warmups prior to playing the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
I don’t know what caught my attention, I mean let’s look at the facts, I lived 1200 miles from Dallas and the Barry Sanders Era was just beginning in Detroit. It could have been the collaboration of Jerry & Jimmy, the perfect storm of Aikman, Emmit & Irvin, or the fact that they played the Lions in Detroit during the playoffs that year. Something made me take notice. Something about the Cowboys captivated me… I was hooked.

Fast forward 21 years… I am a few days away from 30 and still in love with the Cowboys of the Big D. Only now things are different. I’m not a little girl watching the game with innocence and awe. I’m a grown woman watching the game from a place of knowledge. Like all of us, I am forced to see the politics, the way money talks, the way the game has changed. It’s neither good or bad, but it is different.

What happens when you fall in love with America’s Team and get to witness their greatness, only to watch them stumble and fall?

This off season, we sit, we wait, we wonder… Maybe this is our year. Maybe this is our time. Maybe this is the year we will be great again.

To those of us holding out hope… Cheers, Dez

Unconfirmed reports out of Valley Ranch this morning are reporting that Jerry Jones has granted the one wish of many Dallas Cowboy fans and he has officially sold the team. What may be even more surprising is to whom it has been sold too. The owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, now owns two sports franchises in the Dallas area. Cuban will be introduced as the new owner of the Dallas Cowboys in a press conference this afternoon.

Feb 13, 2013; Dallas, TX, USA; Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban watches as his team takes on the Sacramento Kings during the first half at the American Airlines Center.
Cuban, the Media Mogul can now add the title of “Sport’s Mogul” to his extensive resume. It is no surprise the Internet savvy billionaire used Twitter to announce his purchase and immediate plans for the legendary franchise.

“Brought first NBA championship to Dallas. Now, bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Big D. Anyone have Jimmy Johnson’s number?” #ChangingOfTheGuard #BigPurchase - @mcuban

If this tweet is anything more than a joke, then it appears the Jason Garrett reign as Dallas’ head coach has now ended. Obviously, a big name like Jimmy Johnson returning to Dallas would be a huge coup for Cuban. And it might be easier to draw Johnson away from the NFL on Fox sport’s desk then many might think. When asked about the possible sale, here’s what Johnson had to say:

“If the news is true, this is an exciting time for the franchise. Although Jerry and I did great things together with the Cowboys, sometimes a shake up is needed. And I can’t think of a better owner to coach for then Mark Cuban.”

Nov 1, 2012; Miami, FL, USA; Former Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes head coach Jimmy Johnson is seen on the sidelines during a game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Miami Hurricanes at Sun Life Stadium.
One of the first questions Cuban will have to answer is the fate of recently re-signed quarterback Tony Romo. Rumors out of the Cuban camp indicate he’s not happy paying top dollar for a player who has been so unproductive in the playoffs. His camp also indicated that trade talks have already been started with several teams, especially with the St. Louis Rams. The players involved in the talks are as of yet unknown, but Ram’s quarterback Sam Bradford is rumored to be on the trading block.

The Cuban shake-up has officially started in Big D. Who knows what this team will look like when the season starts later this year? One thing I do know: This entire story is phony. Happy April Fools day from all of us at The Landry Hat!
