Is it still too early to declare the Cowboys Super Bowl Champions? Probably so, but we all have to get our minds right if this is going to be the year.

The only thing that I’m left pondering is what is it that makes this year so different than last year?

Well for starters, Bill Callahan is officially calling the plays. Let’s see what else, um Doug Free had his salary cut in half. Oh yeah we now have a potential new starter along the offensive line in Travis Frederick.

June 11, 2013; Irving, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones talks during a press conference after minicamp at Dallas Cowboys Headquarters.
Ok wait. Our goal is to definitely win the Super Bowl, but it doesn’t seem like we made a whole lot of changes. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Many will whip out the old insanity definition and tell you that he who does the same thing over and over and expects a different result and blah blah blah. Well I’m here to say that maybe for once this is a good thing.

Anybody who has witnessed the last fifteen plus years has seen it several times. Jerry gets fed up and turns the coaching staff upside down, or he brings in a bunch of washed up free agents to fill holes across the depth chart.

So maybe he’s not doing the same thing by doing the same thing.

Yeah, maybe for once Jerry is trying to let things gel a bit before going in and blowing it all up.

Heck this might be the smartest thing that Jerry Jones has done in a long time…or maybe the dumbest. I guess we will just have to wait for the first few games of the season to pass before we will know for sure.

One thing is for sure though. Don’t expect Jones to try this again next year if things don’t go so well this season. So I guess it’s safe to say that despite what all the reports are out of camp it would seem like a lot of people are playing or coaching for their jobs.

Maybe this is what Jerry Jones meant by creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Let’s see if it works

I don’t want Tony Romo to have another 4,000 yard season. Never, ever again. He shouldn’t want to either.

The Dallas Cowboys cannot succeed with Tony Romo’s arm alone. I think that is obvious by now. And it’s not that I think Romo’s right arm can’t do it, — because the arm is able — he just needs a little help from friends.

Speaking of friends, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, and Jason Garrett should protect their 33-year-old investment. Asking him to throw bombs (with little changes to the front line and backfield) isn’t the way to go.

Underneath all the criticism and negative murmurs, Romo has thrown up impressive numbers — a trend that he has held up for seven seasons now. Tony Romo doesn’t need to prove or confirm his numbers any longer. He needs to confirm himself as a winner.

The NFL has a done a disservice to the league. Quarterbacks are piling on yards with ease. I don’t like this. I don’t think defenses appreciate this either. Nor do I think this is respectful to quarterbacks of yesterday, who played in a different era with different rules and standards.

But this is what happens when you tamper with the rules. Now it’s to the point where running backs aren’t as important. After all, there’s only one football to toss around. I get it.

This is what Dallas needs to get back to: A strong running game. I’m sure Romo is clamoring for one now that he has “Peyton Manning” kind of responsibility.

The way I see it: Follow the NFL passing trend and lose, or reverse to a traditional power running game and win. Pioneers are welcome. So are winners.

DeMarco Murray is a fine running back. The problem? There are more than 10 weeks in the regular season. Will he stay healthy for one full season? Don’t count on it. Don’t count on him until he actually does it. That’s a shame, because The Cowboys need him — badly.

Unfortunately, the forecast is calling for “Romo 4k” once again. Instead of electing to promote off-season needs, the Cowboys have chosen to go with luxury instead.

I wish I could sit back and write to you, “Don’t worry, be happy.”

But honestly, my tone these days is more like: Do worry, fasten seat belts. That’s because among one of those passes that gets Romo to 4,000, one of them could be the throw that breaks the back and ends a season.

We’ve seen it before.
