I ask this question because it was asked of me by a coworker today and it turned into a long-winded response that I felt I had to bring to this blog tonight.

The coworker, a sports writer, asked me if I thought the Dallas Cowboys should trade Tony Romo for Jay Cutler, who has asked for a trade in Denver. My answer was swift: No.

Why?

Well, the first thing out of my mouth was “What has Jay Cutler done for the Denver Broncos?”

Has he won a playoff game? Has he taken the Broncos to a division title? Has he won big games? Is he a mobile quarterback who has thrown for five interceptions, and yet still have the strength to pull out a win? Nope.

Trading Tony Romo for Jay Cutler would make absolutely no sense.

“Aren’t the Cowboys in a transition?” the coworker then asked.

Yeah, they are, I replied. We released Terrell Owens, cut Pacman Jones, signed a safety out of Jacksonville, released safety Roy Williams, put the defense play-calling into the hands of the head coach, will open a new billion-dollar stadium, and left most of a coaching staff intact that will have immense pressure to succeed. They are in a transition, but they don’t need a complete freaking makeover.

Tony Romo may be the next Danny White, but Danny White did win playoff games, and he did take the Cowboys to divisional championships. The Cowboys just didn’t have enough talent to pull out wins in any of those games. But they do now.

Cutler should end up with the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, San Fransisco 49ers or Jacksonville Jaguars: teams that truly need a young quarterback with a ton of upside. The Cowboys have one. And we have to have faith that he will get the job done.
