If 2010 was the season of expectations for Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys, then 2011 was the season of hope. Put another way, the fans of the Dallas Cowboys have been subjected to two consecutive disappointing seasons: a year of unfulfilled expectations and a season of dashed hopes. This season was particularly painful for the Cowboys’ faithful because they started out the season playing with such promise; the close and late losses to the Jets, Lions, and Patriots left most fans with the impression that the Cowboys could, and should, have won those games. As a result, most concluded that the Boys were capable of beating even the strongest teams in the NFL. The 4 game winning streak in the middle of the season allowed many Cowboy fans to view the one-sided loss to the Eagles as an anomaly. Going into December, the team was 7-4 with the Cowboy Nation believing that they really could have been 10-1. As everyone knows now, the wheels fell off in December, the Boys lost 4 of their last 5 games to finish with a humbling 8-8 record.

A quick perusal of the sports blogs and survey of the news agencies will reveal that the public wants to put the blame on very specific people and/or units. As per usual, the vast majority of those assigning blame do so in a way that provides an overly simplistic view of the real problems with this franchise. The real problems are deeper and much more complex than people want to believe (or are capable of seeing).

Evidently, the Dallas Cowboys like a challenge. So much so, they waived corner back Bryan McCann today to add to their defensive backfield troubles. The thought process behind this move is mind-boggling. Is the Andrew Luck lottery in play here? I’m kidding, of course…or am I? (conspiracy theorists, start your engines!)

McCann was not only one of our few healthy corner backs, he was also our primary return specialist, our gunner on punt return coverage and a key member of the kickoff coverage team. McCann had some big plays for the Boys last season including a 97-yard punt return and a 107 yard interception. Now he’s gone. WTF?

The defensive backfield looks like the opening scene from the movie Saving Private Ryan. Terence Newman hasn’t played in seven weeks due to a groin injury. Orlando Scandrick is hobbling around in a walking boot with a high ankle sprain. And Mike Jenkins is hurting from the mid-chest up. Newman announced on Twitter that he’s back this week. I certainly hope this is true because the only healthy corner we have now is newly acquired Frank Walker. Still, the release of McCann makes no sense. (more…)

Some of the Cowboys top guys showed up Friday morning to the Cowboys training facility to start getting work in. Since the NFL Lockout was lifted players are allowed to start using team facilities. Tony Romo, Jason Witten and Miles Austin were just some of the players who arrived Friday morning to start working. Romo and Witten did dome conditioning on the field and Austin who was seen entering the facility at 7:30 am and left about two hours later. Austin as he left exchanged high fives with Igor Olshansky the defensive line man who was also arriving to get work in.

Also happening on Friday is Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will meet with last year’s 1st round pick Dez Bryant to discuss the wide receivers less than stellar off season. A s you recall Bryant was arrested for criminal trespassing and was sued twice in the offseason for jewelry that he received that he had not paid for. Jones did talk to Bryant on Thursday and told the Dallas Morning News they were going to discuss Dez’s off season problems. “We talked (Thursday),” Jones said. “I wanted to make sure that he was going to come here tomorrow and, more importantly, to meet our trainers. But we will grab some time…before the draft, and we’ll talk about some of those issues.” On Wednesday Jones son, Stephen said that the Cowboys would continue to stand behind Bryant.

What do you think about the Boys returning to work? Are you excited or not really care? Do you think Jerry talking to Dez will help the young wide out?
