Former New Orleans Saints’ Defensive Coordinator, Gregg Williams, has always been the central figure in the NFL’s investigation against the team’s bounty program. But many fans, especially those of the Saints, have rushed to Williams’ defense based on the evidence provided so far. But recently released audio of Williams giving various bounty inspired speeches could just change their minds.

The audio below was recently released via Youtube by filmmaker Sean Pamphilon. Pamphilon was working on a documentary about former Saints player Steve Gleason and his struggle with ALS at the time. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

WARNING: The below audio is not safe for work (NSFW) as it is filled with harsh language.

Here’s the full audio without captions:

While listening to the audio, my first thought was this sounds like many different coaches I’ve heard over the years. But as the recording continued to play, the underlining tone began to get darker. The focus on hurting players in specific areas of their bodies to “test their manhood” was a bit disturbing. (Frank Gore’s head, Vernon Davis’ ankles, etc.)

By the end, at least for me, Williams and his actions became much harder to defend. I think there was a line that was crossed by Williams in his statements. Somewhere it got more than just personal. It got borderline criminal. Especially when you consider the implied financial benefits for doing so.

What do you think about the recently release audio? Is this just part of the game we need to accept or is it going too far? And is it harder to defend him now as simply a football coach trying to get the best out of his players? Leave your comments below.

Word went out this past week that Gregg Williams, while Defensive Coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, led a bounty system with his players from 2009 thru last year. The NFL has conducted an investigation and found substantial proof that he did. The implications apparently are huge – fines, suspensions and loss of draft picks – to start.

Gregg Williams himself has admitted as much by apologizing for it as a prelude to his punishment. The General Manager and Head coach of the Saints, Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton respectively, may also be fined and suspended for not doing anything about it. All I have to say about all this is:

Are you kidding me right now!?

This is the game of TACKLE FOOTBALL! (more…)
