Madden 12 is still no NFL 2K5

Should you fork out $60 for the new Madden? If you want to playwith NFL teams, you will.

As many of you probably already know, Madden 12 is being released to the masses today. Madden is the highly popular football video game series from EA Sports. It also happens to be the only video game you can buy that is licensed by the NFL. This mean no other video game can feature NFL team names or it’s players that are currently in the league.

First off, let me say that I am an avid gamer. I’ve played every version of Madden since it was ported over for the Xbox. And for the past few installments I have been underwhelmed by the lack of progress I’ve seen in the game from year to year. I believe the lack of competition in the market, due to their sole licensing agreement with the NFL, has caused EA Sports to release little more than a $60 roster update every year.

I still believe that NFL 2K5, developed by 2K Sports, is the greatest football game ever created. And even though it’s been 7 years since the release of that gem, no Madden game has measured up to it. Will this be the year that EA Sports finally gets it right?

I haven’t had a chance to dive into my copy yet, but I have played the demo and read a ton of previews on-line. Although my full review is pending, check out my initial impressions after the break. (more…)

Madden 11 Roster Update #17 Details

While the full list of roster update details has yet to be released, some information has been leaked regarding players in the NFC East. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick continues his climb in the Madden 11 ratings and now sits at a 94 overall. Former teammate and current Washington Redskins bench-warmer Donovan McNabb suffered a drop to 85 overall.

McNabb’s replacement, Rex Grossman, was bumped up six points to a 71 overall. Cowboys injured quarterback Tony Romo was finally moved to the IR.

As always, EA Sports Madden 11 simulates the upcoming week’s games. The simulation was done earlier in the week before the Shanahan’s lost all sanity and benched Donovan McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman, so obviously the simulation is flawed. Anyways, here is how EA Sports thinks the game would play out if the Redskins were actually playing their best players and trying to win.

COWBOYS 23, REDSKINS 20

With the Redskins up 20-16 and under a minute left on the clock, Jon Kitna leads the Cowboys on their best drive of the season, capping things off with a game-winning eight-yard touchdown pass with only four seconds left on the clock. Kitna threw for 285 yards and two scores to help Dallas snatch just their fifth win of the season.
