If we think back to the beginning of the 1990′s, it is easy to remember that the Dallas dynasty all began in late August of 1992 when Jimmy Johnson made one final trade that brought a veteran defensive pass rush specialist named Charles Haley from the 49ers to Dallas to complete the rebuilding process of America’s Team.

Nov 27, 2011; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney (93) celebrates after a sack during the game against the Carolina Panthers at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

That situation is very similar to the one facing our 2012 Dallas Cowboys. As well as the defense played Saturday night against the Rams, the more I watch the this team play while superstar OLB Demarcus Ware rehabs his hamstring, it is painfully evident that another pass rusher is needed immediately to complete the rebuilding process of Rob Ryan’s defense.

I believe that the Cowboys should pull the trigger on make a deal with the Indianapolis Colts for OLB/DE Dwight Freeney. The Cowboys could send CB Mike Jenkins and a late draft pick to Indianapolis for Freeney who could come in as a pass rush specialist opposite Ware and take this defense to the next level.

The deal makes perfect sense due to the fact that Mario Butler has played so well as the 4th CB that the Cowboys can afford to trade the soon to be free agent Jenkins who the Colts were interested in just months ago. Freeney is also a soon to be free agent at the end of the year and won’t be back with the rebuilding Colts, so from a contract standpoint the deal makes perfect sense. Freeney is a seven time pro bowler and has 102.5 career sacks. Just think how dangerous this defense will become when offensive coordinators have to block someone else the DeMarcus Ware coming off the edge in passing situations, it is a deal that makes perfect sense.

By Staubach

Darrell Robertson was predicted to be drafted in the 3rd round by Nfldraftscout.com.

He had only had three sacks in 2006 but still made All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team honors which demonstrated that he has other skills, such as an ability to stop the run. His senior year was stellar, with 12 sacks and many stops. At 6’-4” he is a tweener, and maybe better suited to playing linebacker. Reports are that he can drop into coverage in zone blitzes.

During an interview he mentioned he is comfortable and open to a position change. Maybe he dropped because some thought he would have a hard time making that transition for one reason or another. Nfldraftscout.com says he has good speed and an excellent explosion off the snap. He also was an excellent run stopper during his time at Georgia Tech. He was 21st in Georgia Tech history for career tackles-for-loss with 25.0. Someone liked him enough to a highlight reel for him:

Listen to this interview:

I hope he proves he is the best edge rusher in this draft.

During an ESPN interview, he comes across as a nice humble person who is willing to put in the work to make it in the NFL. In the interview he also mentions he patterns his style after “Jason Taylor, Jevon Kearse, and a little bit of Dwight Freeney.”

Interesting note, in a georgiatech.scout.com interview it mentioned that the Chargers, Giants and Dolphins had him on their radar. Good thing for us the radar broke.

Chalk this one up to Jerry Jones being willing to invest on undrafted free agents,
