By: Joe D.

I know I am tempting fate by acknowledging the unspoken, but the Dallas Cowboys players and management have been incredibly well-behaved this off-season. While management may have been tempted, they did not sink millions of dollars into mediocre (& often malcontented) talent.

The players have mostly avoided the police blotter (save for Deon Anderson). That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been “wrong doing”. In this society, getting caught doing wrong is often more important than the wrong doing itself.

Football is a sport played by abnormal people. They have to have a special warring mentality. Players tend to have a greater amount of testosterone which translates into a larger frame and debatably more aggressive behavior. They especially have to embrace the concept that they are indestructible. This certainly contributes to the number of NFL players who drive while intoxicated (Joey Porter, Ronnie Brown, Spencer Havner, Donte Stallworth, etc.). Even being an idiot while intoxicated (BIWI) is now prohibited (Ben Rothlisberger).

Some players also have unfair pressure placed upon them. There are countless stories where a player will enter the bar and not surprisingly will be the biggest guy at the bar. Drunk guys looking to impress fickle women will pick a fight. Avoiding a fight isn’t as easy as it sounds, and not nearly as much fun as the alternative.

Despite all that, the players have been model citizens (save for Deon). Kudos players; kudos management for bringing in players who are both talented and good character guys (or at least smart enough not to get caught). The Cowboys reputation as bad boys may not change anytime soon, but even our bad boys weren’t that bad when they were on the team(Owens – zero arrests; Tank Johnson – zero arrests; Adam Jones – a stupid case of friendly fire).

So Jerry, keep the high character guys coming, and for all of our sakes, avoid Carlos Dunlap, Mike Williams, etc.

If Jerry Jones‘ idea of a surprise is trading the entire draft and players for Darren McFadden, then I might as well commit myself to the closest psych ward. Listen, Jerry, I am not putting words in your mouth. You told ESPN that you would surprise some people if they thought you were going to fill the Cowboys needs in the draft alone.

Since then, Bernard Berrian has been signed. Asante Samuel is gone. Randall Gay, bye bye. Michael Turner no more. Drayton Florence ain’t no Cowboys. Donte Stallworth was never considered nor was Jerry Porter and Isaac Bruce. And now the Raiders miff everyone by paying 56 million for often injured Javon Walker. Better them than us overpaying like that, but Walker is off the table.

But hey, we’ve got Zach Thomas. Surprise, everyone!!!

This is starting to get a tad bit irritating. Warrick Dunn has been dropped, so if we plan to sign him, do it now. As it appears Julius Jones might sign with the Detroit Lions, which is the only team to show any interest in him, we’re losing our chances at making some kind of splash. And the Cowboys need to make a splash!

Where’s the damn surprise, Jerry? Is it McFadden? Do you even realize how bad we need a cornerback, safety and wide receiver? Are you trying to tell us all that Terry Glenn still has life in him? Are you going to try and ride Terrell Owens, Tony Romo and Jason Witten to a Super Bowl without even addressing the holes in the secondary?

I want to know where the hell the surprise is, Jerry. Because, if it is Zach Thomas, I am going to throw a damn chair through a wall!!!!

Will the Dallas Cowboys be interested in wide receiver Donte Stallworth? The Patriots aren’t even tagging Randy Moss.

My initial feeling is the Cowboys need to draft a wide receiver in the first round. Stallworth to me is just another third receiver, a Patrick Crayton if you may. What the Cowboys don’t have is a true No. 2 guy at wide out. Stallworth, in my opinion, doesn’t fit that mold. When he entered the league, I thought he would be. He’s average.

With Terrell Owens getting older, and Terry Glenn likely to retire, this leaves a serious hole. Many of us Cowboys fans aren’t exactly excited about having Crayton at the No. 2 spot again for this coming season.

But, Stallworth will be available.

I say pass on him. Thoughts?
